Most of the reading I've done on the 7.62 X 39 cartridge seems to indicate that 200 yards is really the maximum effective range for it, altho the max. combat range is supposed to be 300 yards. I don't know about your MAK and SKS, but if the accuracy is anything like the new Saiga I bought, (mine sucks, even with a scope and handloads!), I don't think it's a good idea to use them for deer, especially for distance! (Don't know if you're in New England, or open, prairie areas--) This cartridge seems to be pretty close to the .30-30 in ballistics and performance, and the maximum muzzle velocity listed in the Sierra Load book for an SKS/AK-47 with a 125 Grain Spitzer bullet, is only 2300 F.P.S., again, close to the 30-30 at maximum, but with a much lighter bullet-- (Mind you, these are the MAXIMUN, HOT loads listed, and there were only 2 of them that even reach 2300 F.P.S.!) (Norma 200 powder, @26.5 Grains, and Vitavouri N120 powder24.3 Grains--) The rest of the (2 U.S) powders listed, only show a max. of 2250 F.P.S.
Hope this is of some help to you!
Cheers, and shoot safe!
