I actually hated the revival concept with the actors playing the instruments. It worked wonderfully for 'Company', but 'Sweeney Todd' is such a different show, it just doesn't work. I saw the touring cast a few weeks ago and was really disappointed. |

Well that wasn't so bad. The blood was cartoon like so it wasn't that gross. I did close my eyes when he sent a few down the shoot because I didn't want to see a head splatter. If I had watched it not knowing what the hell was going on it would not have been good. I did have a hard time understanding a lot of what they were saying. It was much better than the stage version I saw that's for sure. Johnny ( ) was awesome! I thought it was pretty funny when he and Anthony were singing Johanna while he was slashing everyone's throats. lol And By the Sea was hilarious - the dream sequence thingy - where Mrs. Lovett was singing about the life they could have together while he was totally disgusted by the idea and not paying attention to her at all. lol All in all it was pretty good. If it hadn't been Johnny playing Todd I probably would have never watched it. Then again the movie probably would have never been made if he didn't. |

The original stage version, though (before they retooled it into the mess you saw) was so far superior to the film in every respect, however. Vocally, comedically . . . just so much better. Maybe it took Depp to get the film version made, but I think they could've done so much more with it, had they hired actual singers. As it was, they had to cut so many wonderful parts out that were too challenging for the film cast.
Meh. |

Actually, the original version is available DVD, which is how I saw it, since it opened on Broadway the year I was born. |
