God’s Will For Me - Part 1

Psa 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.

Probably one of the most frequent questions that beleaguer many Christians, is "How do I know the will of God for me?" The truth is that Christians sometimes find it difficult to determine God's will for their lives in certain, if not all situations. And it can be frustrating, and confusing when you don't find a clear direction.

You may find yourself in such a predicament, and wish for a "burning bush"(Ex 3:2) such as God gave Moses. And there are still some who attempt to put out a "fleece,"(Judg 6:37) as Gideon did, or pray for thunder and lightening like God also used in the past.

You may reason, "If God would speak to me in those kind of ways, it would be easy to understand!" However, it’s the word "easy" that’s a hindrance for so many. We want God to hand us a remote control, and while sitting in our La-Z-Boy, we could just click on "God’s will for me," and get the complete instructions. However, I’ve come your way today with some bad news: God doesn’t have any "La-Z-Boys" reserved for "La-Z-Christians!"

I was teasing a man with a haircut like mine (bald) in store a few days ago. I asked him what kind of polish he used on his head. Without hesitation, he answered, "Sweat!"

Way back in Gen 3:17-19, God said to Adam, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': "Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return."

Did you notice that word "sweat" in that Scripture? And that word applies to every area of our life today. Of course those who attempt to get you to give a certain amount to their ministry, and promise you everything from a life of luxury, to money pouring in without you working for it, don’t mention the "principle" laid down by God in Gen 3:17-17, the principle called "sweat!" I wonder why???

Oops, I’m wandering; it’s a preacher disease! If God would just erect a billboard, and say, "John, I want you to become a missionary," there would be no doubt about what He wanted you to do. There would also be no study, no searching, and certainly no "faith" on your part!

Isn’t it interesting that if we hear the word "plumber" from God, we rationalize, "My hearing is getting bad; God must have said "preacher." If God tells us He wants you to be an electrician, you say, "WOW, I always knew God wanted me to be an "Evangelist." Yes, if God would just send us an email and explain what He wants us to do, it would be easy to understand God's guidance.

But that’s not the way He works! To truly find God's will for our life, we often must step out in faith. Yes, this can be scary, nevertheless, we need to realize God is there beside us and he will not allow us to stray as long as we trust in Him. So let’s take a look at some of the ways you may hear from your Heavenly Father.

First of all, "in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."(Prov 3:6) The Psalmist wrote that "the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way."(Psa 37:23) And in Isaiah 30:21, we read, "Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left."

Yes, God's word plainly tells us that God will help us find His direction, however, the question is, "How does He go about it?" This is just my conviction, but I believe God reveals His will to us in two or three stages. Initially, you may get a feeling of direction from God from different sources.

We’ll look at those sources tomorrow. Until then, prepare your heart by saying to God, "Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do it!" If you’re not willing to do the "whatever," then why waste your time, and God’s, by asking Him?

Are you willing?
