Does anyone sprout seeds for their fids?  I was lurking on another parrot group and they seem to strong recommend it.

I believe they are usually mung bean sprouts, although I think soy bean sprouts are used as well, Annie!

Thank you Abby. I thought mung beans were the right ones.
I don't like the idea of putting them under the sink though. That's the place that has the highest chance of mold. Better in an upper cabinet. Rare for mold to grow up there away from water and humidity.
I will try them again. Maybe I left them sprouting for too long.

thanks for all the responses.  I think Abby has a good idea -- maybe we'll just start with alfalfa sprouts from the green grocer -- this way if Dude decides they're for flinging and not eating I'll enjoy the rest.  I used to love a sandwich with whole wheat bread, tomato, munster cheese and sprouts.  Joan

I sprout three times a week I put my seeds or beans on a canning jar I put some warm water over them and drain that water off, then add some more warm water put some cheese cloth over the top of the jar with an elastic band around the rim turn it upside on an angle in a bowl.Rinse it twice a day and in 3 days we have sprouts

Aha ... you just hit the nail on the head, Cat! "Rinse it twice a day ..." That is precisely what I forget to do! lol  The only way I could do something like that successfully is if I were pinned at home for three days, and I had an alarm or something to remind me when to rinse it.

My memory is excellent, it's just very short?

LOL Abby
that's why I keep mine on the window sill about the kitchen sink.I wash dishes there in the morning (ok ALL DAY) after I wash the dishes I rinse the sprouts, same thing after dinner dishes it's just part of my routine now and if I do forget and see them later in the day and can't remember if I did rinse them well ya can't over rinse them hehehe

I am so paranoid about molds that I rinse mine 4 or more times per day. Mine are on the countertop right next to the paper towel holder. Can't possibly forget them.
The sprouting articles say to keep them in very low light or in the dark til they sprout then in a windowsill to green up for a day.

I soaked the mung beans yesterday, from 8 a.m. to midnight. Refirgerated overnight and fed them this morning along with their usual veggie mix. Murphy ate every single bean, Diana chewed a few and Maxi ate about half of hers.
I am sprouting alfalfa now. Started them yesterday, too, but will let them develop the tail and green up. They are so sweet. I like them better than lettuce on a sandwich. I use a quart canning jar and I have three plastic sprouting lids in graduated size openings. Water runs in and out easily thru the holes in the lids. Got them at Walmart for about $2.

Be very careful with sprouts from the produce section. Many of those have been on the shelf too long and will be developing mold.  There was a time about a year ago when all alfalfa sprouts had to be pulled from grocery stores due to mold or bacteria.

This link will take you to the Totally Organics website.  The carry the BEST pellets and soak/sprouted seed mixes on the market! MY opinion.  She just added a soak mix for the little guys....I've been mixing the large and small types together as all birds seem to like the smaller stuff too!  The TOP treat she just added is awesome!  My Rosie was a nutriberry addict and this treat is allowing me to wean her off of them........without getting the cold shoulder.
All products are human grade and organic!

Crystal you are saying the seed mix dry/soak and the 5 pound with the CAG/Sun/Zon on it?
is that the one you buy for your flock?

Yes, that is the one.  I mix that and the type for the smaller birds.
One thing that we have especially noticed with Gudruns mixes - how CLEAN they are!  The other types that I have purchased in the past - you have to rinse them numerous times to get the water to be clear.
If folks are afraid of soaking due to bacteria - I use an organic gratefruit seed with the mix or first rinse seeds in apple cider vinegar.

I buy the small packages from the grocery store and the health food store. Never noticed if they were organic.
The wide mouth jar lids at WalMart are in the aisle with canning supplies. I used a quart jar for the alfalfa since it takes longer to sprout and a pint jar for the mung beans since they were only soaking for one day and were not beign sprouted.
I also use the Nutribiotic once daily in a rinse but the other 3 rinses are clear water.
My alfalfa is about 1/2 inch long now. Maybe tomorrow I will green them up.
