Hello,

I'm thinking about getting a bird.  Can you have two canaries in a cage together?

Do canaries like to sing?

And, what are finches like?  Do THEY sing?

What about Love Birds? What are THEY like?

Thanks!

Mokie, do you need two birds?  One male canary will be quite happy living alone and will sing beautifully. I had one for 16 years and he sang daily except during the molt. The problem with getting two, is that two males may fight, females don't sing and if you get one of each, they will probably want to breed.
Finches do sing but don't have the loud voices that canaries do. I raised Lady Gouldians for a while and kept one little male as a pet. He sang very well but not as loud as the canary.
I once had two male lovebirds who wanted no part of human interaction. They are better kept alone, too, if you want to be able to handle them. Two will bond with one another and will likely not want to be tamed. I haven't had a female lovie, but from the people here who have written about theirs, the females get pretty bitey when they become hormonal.
Maybe others will give their opinions.
Annie

I would say "Ditto" to what Annie said.  And I would add that you can do research on the characteristics of the various species online, through books, and through magazines like Bird Talk.  I would urge you to learn everything you can about all kinds of birds, their care and needs, before even thinking about buying one.  It's a big decision.

I know this is late, but I raise Zebra Finches. They are very social animals, and need a playmate, the thing is, two males will fight, and two females will fight, so you are best off with a male and female. If you don't want them to breed, simply do not supply them with a nest or nesting material. Just supply a place they can hide (like a fake plant). The males do sing, they have one song that they know and they will sing like crazy if propely cared for. Also, if you decide you want to breed them (great experience!) the father will teach his song to his babies, and they will add in their own note(s) and then they teach it to their babies so on.... They are great birds! Happy Hunting!
