Aalie ~ in regards to your post #36 I looked up all the bible references and some others that were mentioned in my bible and have come to the conclusion that if God calls upon a man (or woman) to be an apostle then it shall be.
In Romans 1:1 Paul states first that he is a servant of Jesus Christ and is set apart for the gospel of God. That could mean that many a Christian can become an apostle.
My notes for Mark 6:30 state that the Greek word apostolos means "messenger."
1 Cor 1:1 states that Paul is an apostle "by the will of God."
My notes on Hebrew 3:1 state that the word apostle means "one who is sent."
In 1 Cor chapter 9 it seems that Paul has been challenged on calling himself an apostle and he argues his case in this chapter.
Interestingly, 2 Cor 12:12 states that "the things that mark an apostle" are "signs, wonders, and miracles" And Paul further describes himself in 2 Cor 12:11 as "least inferior to the "super-apostles"" which I gather are the original 12 who witnessed everything of Jesus personally.
Paul is the author of 1 Timothy and in 1 Tim 2:7 he states that he is "a teacher of the true faith."
In summation, I would believe that any person who is a teacher of the true faith (the word of God and the truth of Jesus Christ and salvation) is essentially an "apostle!"
What do you think?
