I was diagnosed around the second week of January, by Feb. I had lost 12 pounds. As of this past Monday I had lost 32 pounds...that's 32 pounds in three months. So, yes, I have been losing weight since diagnosis. I haven't been trying to lose weight, but I'm not surprised, as I've changed what I'm eating to cut out anything that raises my bg too much. I've gone to a pretty low carb diet. So, even tho my intent was not to lose weight, my eating habits are similar to those who diet. I have tried to remain low fat (always did that), but also do the low carb, or at least low glycemic index. I will admit, in doing that, sometimes the fat goes up a little more than it was before, but nothing that alarms me or seems to affect my weight loss. I think I am now just eating right for my body. |

Are you testing your sugars? Still thirsty, weak, having other symptoms? Dropping weight is a common symptom of high sugars. Once the sugars come under control, the usual response from the depleted body (from dehydration and toxins in the blood that have previously gone unchecked) is to gain weight. It is a form of recovery. If you are losing weight, with NO change in eating habits or exercise, it is probably not some gift from the Gods! It is more likely a symptom that something is still out of kilter. PLEASE check with your doctor. Could someone be fiddling with your home scale? Because those things are not all that reliable. Are you taking oral meds for diabetes? Having intestinal side effects (like nausea and diarrhea)? If so, maybe you really aren't eating as much as you think, or losing fluids. As I said, please check with your doctor to be sure there is no outstanding issue, OK? HUGS! |

I too think it's your sugars, have you been testing them ? I lost weight too when I was first diagnosed and I wasn't trying too..soon found out why ..my sugars were thru the roof. Altho it's nice to lose the weight sometimes..lossing from sugars running high is dangerious. Maryb |

"32 pounds is a lot in the time period and it may not be a blessing.. it may be a symptom. " Veets, I think you are mistaking my post as part of happymommyof3angels' post. She said she has lost 12 in the last 3 weeks. I said I've lost 32 in three months....and I have changed my diet. As well, I have been monitoring my bg ... testing 6-7 times daily, and they are in the right range...90-110 before I eat (sometimes as low as 80's, and on three occasions in the 70's), and 110-125 two hours after. So I think my loss is due to a much stricter diet and increased activity. As well, the neurological symptoms I was having have all but gone, and my eyesight went back to normal within the first month...and my doc is happy with my progress. I don't think of it as a blessing, so much as a consequence of a lot of modifications and motivation. That is not to take away concern for happymommy.... I'm just trying to clarify the confusion. I didn't think of the weight loss being symptoms of higher bg, but I do remember seeing that...I am new to the world of diabetes, so it wasn't my first thought. I've read up a lot, but it is so much to take in at one time. I remember reading and hearing that weight loss without trying due to high sugars can be really dangerous, so I would also suggest checking with your doc. |

If only when my sugar goes high I could lose weight, I would still have something to look forward to, for me I gain even more,I hope that Byetta helps me. It is good to be able to lose weight without trying but I hope it is from the reason of something good. angelian |
