Marge, I was looking over the BG posts for the past few days and your numbers look a whole lot like mine in the mornings.  I catch hell trying to get lower bg levels.  I'm on insulin due to elevated liver enzymes and I just can't do it.  I try to stay under 200 is the best I can do yall.  My eating habits suckat times.  I do well for a while and before long, I'm right back into my old habits.  I don't eat cakes, candy but I do drink pepsi, not diet, from time to time. Diet makes me nauseas.  I know i'm gonna have to do better. But it hard!!!

Good morning.... 121 for me this am.

Misskitty, have you talked with your nutricianist(sp)?  They can help you figure out what you are doing wrong.

For starters, when you drink Pepsi, how much do you have per meal.  Could be you are going over your carb amount if you are drinking more than 2 to 4 ounces with each meal.  An 8 ounce glass of Coke or Pepsi is 27g.  If you are only allowed say 45 grams of carbs per meal, then you are either eating possibly only one other carb choice that is just under 20.

Sorry you are not getting your numbers lower.  You really need to start eating properly, if you want to get your numbers lower than 200, and it sounds as if you really need to.  Heck... when I was diagnosed about a year ago... my doc told me where she wanted to see my numbers and I have been doing my best to stay around those numbers.

Please try to look at your eating habits a bit closer....you are a diabetic after all, and it will not fix itself.  Even if you are taking insulin, you still need to eat right.

Hope you have a great day today.

Huggles.....

Debra

From whom?  Anyone who is interfering with you trying to be healthy is not doing you any favors.  If someone is encouraging you, then assume it is out of concern and caring.  And if YOU are interfering with your own success, then just stop.

If artificial sweeteners bother you, drink water.  Sugared soft drinks go into your blood stream very quickly, and will spike you sugar levels.  Even juices would be better than soda.  At least there is some mutrition and fiber in juice.  Try freezing juice cubes, so you consume it more slowly...it is cooling too, for these hot, Summer days.
You are an adult, and you know what you have to do.  It's up to you.
HUGS!  sheryl

Like most people I hate it when I get told what to do - but Sheryl is right; you are the only one in control of your diet - and from what you say, that's where you need help. If diet pepsi makes you nauseaus, try a diet soda sweetened with Splenda. Or try kool aid with splenda and plain seltzer water (not club soda which has salt in it). Diet Rite also makes soda that is sweetened with Splenda and not nutrasweet. I personally find that nutrasweet makes me nauseaus also.

Believe me, I love my taters, rice and white bread - but I force myself to moderate or eliminate. It's all a matter of choices - and I know that I can't choose it all. I want to - but I know I can't. I refuse to let that meter win!

Thanks everyone! All of you are right.  Debra, I never really learned to count carbs.  Anything that takes much effort, I loose interest quickly.  However, this is a life and death situation and I know I've gotta get control of this bad behavior.  I have improved, but not enough.   Actually, I've gotta go all the way back to the basics.  After dealing with this and other things for so long, you kinda get a little undisciplined.  Thanks for the reality check guys....

counting carbs is actually quite easy. One serving is about 15 carbs. My nutritionist has recommended that I stick to about 130 carbs a day; I've heard similar from other diabetics. That means about 35 carbs for breakfast, 15 carbs for a snack about 2 hours later, 30 carbs for lunch, 15 carbs for a snack 2 hours later, 30 carbs for supper, and a light snack of about 10 carbs before bedtime. If you don't use the carbs for any one meal or snack, you can bank them or use them at a different meal or snack.

So what equals a serving of carbs? Two slices of normal bread, or one hamburger or hot dog bun is about 21 carbs. A bowl of cereal is about 25 carbs. A full glass of milk is about 12 carbs.

Some typical breakfast suggestions - one kid size bowl of cereal with nuts or dried fruit and cup of coffee or tea for breakfast; one egg and meat/cheese breakfast sandwich. One packet of low sugar oatmeal.

lunch - one home made sandwich, a small salad, glass of sugar free something. One large salad, not pasta salad or potato salad. 2 slices of cheese pizza. One fast food burger but take off the bottom bun. One fast food sub - but when you eat it put all the sandwich on half the roll.

snacks - apple with cinnamon and splenda; low sugar yogurt, about 5 crackers and cheese; half a bagel with cream cheese, about  a handful of nuts or cheese cubes

Supper - any lean meat, veggie and salad combo. If pasta, use Dreamfields pasta (low digestible carbs) Try to not eat the rolls with butter, or have white rice or white potatoes.

Bedtime snack - small (very small) bowl of sugar free ice cream, half a peanut butter sandwich, a yogurt, half a banana.

Almost any can or bottle of straight juice or soda will equal at least 2 servings - sometimes 3 of carbs. Most people will tell you that Splenda has the least bad taste of all artificial sweeteners, and if you are drinking something you don't always drink you might not even notice it.

Hope this helps!
Laura

Thanks a lot.  It helps.  I have some idea of what you are talking about.  I did take a class, but at that time, I just wasn't interested. I guess I was still in denial.  I'm still here so its not too late for me to get back in the race.  Thanks again for the encouragement and I will defintely begin with what you given me today.

Miss Kitty - you are not by yourself in being in denial.  So am I.  I'm going on 75 in a few weeks and find it unfitten to not enjoy what I like to eat....dang I made it this far - diagnosed in 1997 with this dratted disease...take oral meds and sometimes sugar is normal and sometimes it's not.  I know what to not eat...and do leave off a lot of stuff but do eat bad sometimes.

I understand what you mean.  I just didn't want to have to be so disciplined about everytime I go to put food in my mouth!  I get tired of it as a matter of fact.  Having to count this and not eat that and I just rather not eat at times.  A lot of times I just walk away from the refrigerator because I don't wanna have to figure out whether I should eat this or that or not.  But like I was reminded earlier.  I am a diabetic right now.  I've gotta face that and get with the program.  I'm encouraging you to get with me.  We are gonna just try even harder.  I've gotta learn to eat to live.
