Good Morning, I am new to your site. I read through several message boards and yours seems so friendly, supportive and helpful.
My first question is : Does anyone know how I can get the information that an educator would give you for free? My medical coverage has a $300 co-pay for the Diabetes educator and i cannot afford that.
I do not think I am getting enough carbs. I am concerned they will push my BS too high. Sorry I should have said I am type 2 and have been for a year or more.
I am not good at working out a menu. Anyone know of a place on line that works out the menus for you.
Sorry a lot of questions for a first timer. I just get a little desperate sometimes.
Thank you |

Welcome to the group, Animal Lover.... we also are a group of animal lovers.....I for one am a cat lover and Mr. Lucky is a beautiful beautiful kitty...... oh yeah, I'm Cheryl been T1 for 34 years and presently have no complications due to diabetes.... Your read on this group is certainly correct. I've been a member since Jan. 2007 and I have met and shared my days since then with many wonderful and supportive people here. Unfortunately, I've never been to a diabetes educator so I'm not sure what info they would be giving to a patient....I know that many of our members here do go to one so they will be able to offer you more info than I have on that. As for your fear of someone increasing your carbs to the point where it will elevate your bs's.....talk to whoever might be increasing your carbs and express to them your worry. You will find out, if you haven't already, that worry and stress will also elevate your bs's.... so if your stressed about whatever carb increase you might be trying....it could be your stress that raises your readings rather than the carbs..... just talk it out with them.... tell them your fear and try to release it. Anyway, I'm sure others will offer you good info and direction..... here's one thing though that all newbies are asked ....if you could post with a dark font and one of a size 4 or 5, it will make it easier for all of our members to read. Either due to aging or their diabetes, some of our members have poorer eyesight and if they are unable to read your post, they won't be able to respond..... but please, I hope you feel comfortable and I hope you post whatever questions, concerns, worries or smiles you have, you will share with us......every question you have is important..... (and we never get tired of kitty pictures) see ya. Peace,Cheryl |

I had a session with a "diabetic educator" when I was first dx w/T2 7 years ago...I use the term loosely as the only thing she did was make sure I could give myself injections. Guess you get what you pay for. I attended a seminar later that had plates full of sweets for the attendees...were they kidding? I find just following a sensible food plan works for me. Not all carbs are bad guys. Fresh fruit, whole grains, etc. are needed along with the good fats of olive oil and nuts. I have experimented with all kinds of foods just to see which ones will spike my BS. White rice sends me through the roof but brown rice lowers my sugars..go figure. I also find that small amounts spread over the day is much better...which is what most diets recommend anyway. Every body is different so you just find out what works for you. It may take time but keep after it. |
