On the other end of the spectrum - this is what I ate yesteday: breakfast - 2 egg omelet with peppers, onions, mushrooms; and 4 small slices of bacon. one cup of coffee with sugar free creamer - little to no carb - 2 hour test - 94 snack - one south beach snack bar - about 12 carbs lunch - one grilled ham and cheese sandwich (3 alices deli sliced ham with two slices provolone on low carb white bread - i use olive oil to brown the sandwich) about 20 carbs - 2 hour test - 101 snack - one plum - about 12 carbs supper - one meatball sandwich ( one slice provolone, once slive mozzarella, 4 small meatballs, sauce, one hoagie roll with some of the soft inside removed) - about 30 carb. Glass of red wine spritzer with diet seven up. - 2 hour test - 96 snack - one small slice cheesecake with strawberry sauce and whipped cream (cheesecake was homemade so about 10 carb, strawberry sauce was sugar free - about 3 carb whipped cream about 2 carb.) test before bedtime - 94 I did (do usually do) about 30 minutes of exercise - 10 minutes on the elliptical, 10 minutes on the bicycle and 10 minutes on the treadmill. I detest exercise but I see that it does make the numbers go lower. On a meal plan and exercise plan like I mentioned I've lost 35 pounds since October. I have to be honest here - a diet like others have posted above would at the very least depress ands de-motivate me. It simply would be impossible to maintain - not just because of willpower but because I just don't find it to be "normal". I have a professional career working a full time job, and two teenage boys. I love food - cooking it, eating it, savoring all the various flavors and scents and textures. For me, the challenge of the condition of diabetes is learning to make good choices, with nothing being off limits and without changing my lifestyle in such a way that I am not like everyone else. With my 1000 mg of metformin every day I keep my numbers consistently between 85 and 120. A 120 means I splurged on something, an 85 means I needed to eat more. My nutritionist recommended below 110 on waking and below 140 after meals. She has me about 130 carbs a day and 1300 calories. Laura |

Me? I'm a former model and still have a touch of anorexia. It "acts up" when I'm stressed. If you know me, you know why... But where some women eat more with stress, my tummy closes for business. Depression? Yep. But didn't eat much ever. Not eating doesn't depress me...life does. sheryl |

LOL thank you! I refuse to give up any foods as long as I can control the carbs and portions. That means using low carb this and or that most of the time if I can. Sometimes it's a trade off - fat for carb. I find it's easier to control the fat then the carb - so that's what I"ll go for - i.e. ranch dressing has higher fat but lower carbs than Italian dressing (unless it's home made). I'm still losing the weight with the dreaded 30 minutes of exercise so I'd guess it's working! If you can afford reduced cost strips, check out e-bay. My insurance company balks on me getting more than 100 strips at a time; 100 strips isn't an entire month if you test 4 times a day (not counting bad tests). So, I order mine off of e-bay once every couple of months. The prices are about 3/5 of retail. Laura |

My belly can't handle breakfast so I eat everyday 2 oranges for brunch.. than whatever we plan for dinner...keeping portions small...I only drink water...And I dont keep any sweets in the house because I indulge to much if I do...hubby says he can't see why I have any extra weight because I don't eat enough...I think it's because my metabolism is slow from no excerise...My fibromyalgia pain is so bad I hate too... |

When I am working I eat a cup of oatmeal for breakfast. for lunch, a sandwich, chips cookies and maybe fruit and supper is my big meal and varies. On weekend, my breakfast is large....two eggs, buiscits, two sausage patties, hash browns and milk. I recently started glipizide and have been forced to double the calories or risk going low. Lows are very uncomfortable. danny |

I tend to eat too much fat because I don't tolerate many carbs, especially in the morning. I typically eat two eggs, 1 whole wheat toast, about 1/4 cup oj, just to satisfy my craving for juice. Or toast with cheese. Have to have that protein and cereal of any type makes my numbers too high. I have run out of ideas for breakfast. I try to eat smaller portions at meals and snack on small pieces of fruit, yogurt, nuts. I have always been a big eater and just cutting down to sensible portions is a challenge but helps so much.
I am now trying to make those smaller portions more healthy. I wish I had some great ideas to offer others but right now just trying to do better is a challenge. Jo |

I agree with LauraG. I have learned over the years to pretty much ignore anything reported on television/newspapers. I emphatically ignore information supported with statistics as an authority. I cite the recent scare over tomatoes as a recent example of many I could draw from as far back as I can remember. When I was first diagnosed officially a diabetic, I tried to follow the ADA nutrition recommendations, and was surprised when my quarterly lipid profile changed in the wrong direction. HDL went down, LDL went up and triglicerides went up. Surprised me, so I tightened up some more.....less fat more carbohydrates. worse results on next lipid panel and earned me a scolding from my doctor who didn't believe me when I told her Iwas indeed following the dietitians advice. In the mean time, I bought a book by Grechen Becker "The first Year Type 2 Diabetes". a very good book for a type 2 to read. In the last part of the book she addressed the question of diet and using a glucometer that also reported cholesterol, she compared the low carb diet to the high carb diet. Granted, it was an uncontrolled test and a very short duration, but it was very suggestive, particularly when it demonstrated results similar to my own on the high carb diet. Now, I am eating as I like. More eggs, meat, some potatoes and some bread, and I am losing weight and my lipids are where they should be. peace |

Sheryl, I hope life is really good for you - you sound like you are doing well and I wish the best for you. I get depressed because I get so tired and then cannot seem to function well w/o eating something which I think will give me instant "energy" - so I go overboard......I am frustrated like no tomorrow........I have to start making meal prep a priority, especially the night before going to work by making healthy lunches. I so appreciate all your ideas. Doodles |
