Hello all looking for Patrick McCarthy a Baker.

This is a bit of a long shot, but all i know of Patrick McCarthy is that he died before 1859. He had a wife called Ann Brooks born c1830, Ireland.

On the welsh census information the family had moved to Cardiff, Wales either with or without Patrick before 1859.

In 1859 Ann had remarried to a John Day and were living in Wood Street, Cardiff on the 1861 Census. The 1861 Census, also shows her Son from her first marriage John McCarthy born c1846 a Cabinet Maker
on the 1871 Census however it is her other Son Richard Brooks McCarthy (my gt gt gt Grandfather) that is living with his mum and stepfather, Richard was born c1852 in Bantry, Ireland according to the Census record.

Between 1873 and 1875 Richard would drop McCarthy and just use Brooks as his surname, reasons remain pure guess work!

Did Ann divorce Patrick, did Patrick die. Either way, Richard was clearly unhappy to use the McCarthy name again... Ann was Catholic by the way, and remarried in St Davids Chapel, Cardiff.

Can anyone help?

I found these landowners listed under Brooks in Co. Cork at the time of the Griffiths Valuations 1846-1864.

Durrus is very near to Bantry, and Schull (pronounced Skull) is a bit further south.

Surname First Name Townland Parish County
Following are the exact matches:
Brooks John Cashelfean Skull Cork
Brooks Samuel Cappagh Beg Skull Cork
Brooks Elizabeth Barrugrour Kilcaskan Cork
Brooks Edmond Canrooska Kilcaskan Cork
Brooks Henry Grand Parade Holy Trinity Cork
Brooks Edward Dromreagh Durrus Cork

Hope this is helpful.
