Hello to all,
This Golliher family has me stuck. I have spent at least two years chasing down bits and pieces, but can't seem to get too far. Maybe some input would help. Here is what I know or at least THINK I know:
Thomas Golliher (b. Tennessee, abt. 1819) and Martha or Margaret Unknown (b. Illinois abt. 1822) are in Jackson County, Illinois by 1850 (census).
They have William (b. abt. 1839), Daniel (b. abt. 1841), Sarah Jane (b. abt. 1844), Ann (b. abt. 1847), Thomas D.(b. April 12, 1851), Mary (b. abt. 1855), and Emmeline (b. Feb. 1857)
Thomas and Martha both die about 1870 (There is a probate record that indicates death for Thomas at 1863) The oldest som William married Dortha Qualls in 1867 (Jackson County, Illinois) and I know that William's younger brother Thomas D. comes to live with William and Dortha.
I have heard that William and Dortha childrens names are: Lillie Victoria, Harmon, William Jr., Loren, Arthur and JoAnn. I can not find any type of listing for thses names except Harmon who dies in Califonia in 1966.
Daniel Golliher dies at Benton Barricks during the Civil War in June, 1863.
Sarah Jane marries James H. Vaughn, June 1869 in Jackson County, Ill.
I can not find a trace of Ann after the 1850 census when she is three years old.
Thomas D. marries in Oct. 1885 to Marian Mayfield Fears and heads for Arkansas. I have quite a bit of information on him.
Mary married David Williams then Unknown Cox. She lived in California abt. 1924 when Thomas D. died.
Emmeline married Harrison Burklow in 1871 when she was 14 years old. Harrison was tried for murder, found guilty and hung July 5, 1878 in Johnson County, Ill. Emma and Harrison's  children are found in the 1880 census living with Emma;s sisters Sarah and Mary. Sarah is in Jackson County, Illinois running a boarding house for miners with Viola Burklow and Harrison Jr. is with Mary. Emma then marries a man named J. Jones and has three more children..H.B., Grace and Lauretta.
What I still NEED is Thomas's fathers name and Martha's maiden name. I was once sent information that the father is Stephen who married Hannah, then Elizabeth Etherton. I can not find ANY such record. I think if I can get past this father I might go somewhere. Of course any of the other dead ends mentioned above would be helpful. Any input here? I need help! Thanks so much..you guys are the best.
Cindy

Thanks Gordon. I will spend the next few days, weeks going through this information. There has to be a scrap out there somewhere that adds up, and I WILL find it. After searching this long it has become a quest for me.

Were they married in Jackson County? If you think they were, and if you aren't near Jackson County, I can look them up in the Jackson County marriage book. Do you know about when they were married?

Martha's maiden name was Davis.

The Jackson County marriage record book gives quite a bit of information for marriages between about 1878 and 1890 or so. I looked up Thomas D's marriage since you had an approximate date. Here is what imformation it gave. Thomas D. Golliher married the widow Mary Thorp on 10-15-1885. Mary's maiden name was Mary M. Pierce. This was Thomas D's first marriage. He would be 25 on his next birthday. He resides in Jackson County at the time of his marriage. Mary Thorp is the daughter of Alexander Pierce and Sarah Pleasant. Witnesses of the marriage were WE Robinson and AC Davis J.P.

I also found a copy of a marriage certificate for William Golliher and Dortha (or Partha?) Qualls. It didn't give any familial history though. The date was 22 Sept. 1869.

This particular county clerk in 1885--the one who kept the marriage records has gorgeous handwriting, but he makes mistakes--I've found a couple mistakes he made in my family with names.  Anyhow, I didn't want you to be thrown off by him writing "Pierce" instead of Fears. I'm sure it's the same person, but he wrote what he heard--maybe he was slightly deaf!

I've been enjoying looking for Gollihers in the census book, too. They were neighbors of some of my ancestors. If I am ever allowed to go back in time to talk to my ancestors, I'll ask them for you if they know who Thomas' parents were!! heh-heh.
Did you know that in 1850 there is a Hannah Golliher (spelled Golleher in my census book)  living with a John Golliher in Jackson County? You probably already knew that and also that she is still living at age 61 in 1860 and living with John Golliher's neighbors the Bilderbacks.  Maybe Stephen and Hannah were divorced??

I can understand your confusion about this family! I have some families here that are frustrating me too.
