I am in uncharted territory (for me) and could use some "experianced" advice. I've written before about this name, see I'M SO STUCK, but really do not know what direction to go. I have read everything on the Gollihers, but have never found a clue as to the paternity of my stopping point. Itrace this family to Jackson County, Illinois. In 1850 Thomas and wife are on the census with children. I did what seemed logical to me, and went back to 1840. Here I find 3 families with this spelling. James Golliher, Thomas Golliher and Stephen Golliher. Stephen is the oldest male in the group, James is listed 30-40 years, Thomas 20-30 years and Stephen, then Stephen who is 40-50. Going back to 1830 I find Peter age 70-80, and Stephen age 40-50. Thomas is my known factor. Thomas has one son by 1840, and the census bears this out. The approx. birthdate, names etc. match my Thomas Gollher, but I CAN NOT figure out who his father is. The Stephen Golliher listed is one that married Elizabeth Etherton. According to any records I have found, this is not Thomas's father. I can't seem to find children listed for aPeter or James. I can't even find another researcher on this family, that has any clues. How do I determine the father of Thomas? It is perfectly okay to give me the ABCs on this one, as clearly I am lost. Thanks so much. |

Cynote;
Assuming that you've been relying primarily on Internet access for your research,
I would suggest that it is now time to hit the libraries, FHC's, NARA, IRAD,
as well as local colleges and historical/genealogical societies--e-mail 'em,
call 'em, visit 'em. You need to find records that will substitute for the
info that's not available in the pre-1850 censuses. This is where you really
have to earn your genealogical stripes.
BTW:. To find the appropriate historical and genealogical societies, go to Google, click "advanced search", then:
1) in the first window (entitled: "with all the words"), type in "society illinois" (w/o the quotes of course);
2) next window (entitled: "with the exact phrase") type in the name of your ancestor's county and the word "county";
3) in the third window (entitled: with at least one of the words") type in "genealogical historical".
So for my ancestors the final query ends appearing like this: society illinois genealogical OR historical "cook county"
Hope this helps, Cheers, Wayne
