Hi Folks;
Well its that time again. I think Sandy has gotten more than enough to chew on for awhile.
Donna, it appears that the Yellow Brick Road now leads to YOUR door! (I've been waiting to say that, LOL) I know you've gotten a lot of responses since you posted your update but will post it anyway. If you get some duplication that's okay too. ***** Begin Donna's posting ***** Donna's updated posting: Updated my brickwalls on Mathew & Mary (HENSLEY) MORRIS, follows
"For everyone's convenience, here is my updated brickwall: Ancestors: Mathew MORRIS (may be James Mathew MORRIS) & his wife Mary Roseanna? HENSLEY & children.
Residences of this Morris family: Edgar, Fayette, & Clay Cos., IL; Wayne Co., IA; Pittsburg Landing, TN (Battle of Shiloh); Paducah, McCracken Co., KY; Montgomery, Howard/Elk, Wilson, Cherokee, & Neosho Cos., KS; Seneca, Newton Co., MO; Jasper Co., MO?
Basic Stats: Mathew MORRIS (b. 30 June 1823, OH; d. 19 Apr 1862, Paducah, McCracken Co., KY--Army Hospital), m. 14 Sept 1845, Edgar Co., IL, to Mary Roseanna? HENSLEY (b. ca.1825, IL; d. possibly 1 Jan 1895, Jasper Co., MO; bur. possiblyJan 1895, Seneca, Newton Co., MO)--please note that I have been unable to find proof of any of Mary's death or burial info). Mary's parents were James & Elizabeth (LEWIS) HENSLEY. I'm not sure of her grandparents name...possibly her paternal grandparents were Chrisley & Catherine (__?__) HENSLEY. I have no idea who her maternal grandparents were.
Mathew's Military Service: 18th Inf. Missouri Vol., Co. B--Private. Mathew Morris enlisted 17 June 1861, Putnam Co., MO. Mustered in 14 Nov 1861, at Laclede at Camp Morgan, MO (age 38). Mathew was a Civil War casualty. He was wounded at Pittsburg Landing, TN at the Battle of Shiloh on 6 Apr 1862, & died 13 days later at Paducah, McCracken Co., KY U.S. Army Hospital. Mathew's unit was commanded by Capt. Henry P. Shilts/Stults.
Censuses: I have found Mathew & Mary (HENSLEY) MORRIS in the following censuses: 1850--Clay & Richland, Dist. #14, Clay Co., IL; 1860--Howard twp., Wayne Co., IA. Mary & children moved on to KS after the death of Mathew, there they were found in the following censuses: 1870--Louisburg twp, Montgomery Co., KS; 1875--Longton, Howard Co., KS; 1880--Chetopa twp., Neosho Co., KS.
Mathew & Mary (HENSLEY) MORRIS' children: (1.) Dennis D. (b. 8 Jan 1847, IL) (2.) Jemima (b. 30 Mar 1848/49, Clay Co., IL) (3.) Ellen Elizabeth (b. 30 Oct 1852, Fayette Co., IL--note: Ellen is my great-grandmother. She m. Solomon William Tice on 26 Dec 1872, in Wilson Co., KS) (4.) Mary Ann Catherine (b. 18 Sept 1855, Wayne Co., IA) (5.) Deborah Jane (b. 25 Dec 1857, Warsaw, Wayne Co., IA) (6.) Tabitha Angelina (b. 16 June 1860, Howard twp., Wayne Co., IA). (7.) Some researchers say that Mary had another child William T. MORRIS (b. ca.1864, IA). Of course, if this is so, the child could not have been Mathew's, since Mathew died in 1862. I have not found anything on this child except in the following: in the 1870 census he was 6 years old, he was again in Mary's 1880 household, & he was listed in his sister Deborah Jane (MORRIS) SNYDER's obit of 1926 as living in Heavener, OK at the time. As far as I know, Mary had not remarried after Mathew's death.
Bought & Sold Land: 20 June 1885--Mary bought & sold land from & to her son-in-law & daughter (my great-grandparents) Solomon William & Ellen Elizabeth (MORRIS) TICE in Seneca, Newton Co., MO, while she resided in Newton Co., MO. 17 July 1889--Mary sold land to a John Tipton, while she resided in Weir City, Cherokee Co., KS.
I have found the surname MORRIS spelled MORSE, MORRISS, etc.
MY BRICKWALLS CONCERNING THIS FAMILY (1) Where is Mathew MORRIS buried? (2) Is Mathew's given name "James Mathew" or just "Mathew"? (3) Where is his wife Mary (HENSLEY) MORRIS buried? (4) Where & when was Mary born? (ca.1825, IL is all I know) (5) Did Mary have another child (William T. MORRIS) born ca. 1864, IA, approx. 3 years after her husband Mathew's death? If out of wedlock, maybe that's why she & the children moved to KS. Or maybe William was an illegitimate grandchild she took as her own. (6) Had Mary remarried, after all? If so, probably in KS or MO."; and
"Added info: Mathew MORRIS' parents were Levi & Jemima (LONG) MORRIS. Levi may have been Calvin Levi MORRIS. Levi was b. 8 Nov 1803, OH, m. 23 Feb 1823, Pike Co., OH to Jemima LONG, dau. John & Catherine? (__?__) LONG, Sr. Jemima LONG was b. 9 Feb 1804, OH, & died 20 Nov 1870, Wayne Co., IA. She is bur. In 1840, they were in Edgar Co., IL; 1850, Clay & Richland Dist #14, Clay Co., IL; 1860 & 1870, Howard twp., Wayne Co., IA. Edward Coddington (1770-1840) married Elizabeth Harvey at Braceborough on the 22nd May 1800 and they settled in Langtoft where nine of their ten children were born. One of them, William (born 1806), married Betsy Brumly and in 1857 emigrated to Australia with nine of their 14 siblings. Another child was Thomas Coddington (born 1819) who married Sarah Butterworth at Moulton on the 27th March 1842. They had 10 children including Martha (1856-1937) who gave birth to George Coddington (1877) out of wedlock but three months later on the 6th March 1877 she married William Warne who was 40 years age and they lived all of their married life, as did Martha's parents, in a cottage almost opposite St Michael's Church at Langtoft. Any information about these names would be welcome. This looked interesting, may not be of value at all. I know that it took 3 census images to put my grand uncle together... (one by middle name, one by initials, one by first name.) His parents were the only thing consistent. Three locations. I know that another grand uncle of mine had a given name, upon baptism he changed it to a Christian name, kept the same initials to keep his mother happy. Basically he had four names... Mercer Finney and Michael Francis, or any combination of those. Sometimes you have to go the extra garden to validate or invalidate. Good luck! |

Donna;
I can't say. I saw the name and thought it worth passing on. I suggest you write the owner of the site and ask her/him. Cheers, Wayne |

Hi Wayne, I have the 1870 census for my Morris family. And I hate to tell you this, but my James Hensley was in Clark Co., IL in 1830. Not sure where he was in 1820.....may still have been in KY, possibly Floyd County. The name James Hensley is so common. I have never seen Chrisley Hensley's first name as anything other than Chrisley, but have always wondered if it is a nickname for Christopher or Christian. He was born ca. 1748, possibly VA, & did not name any of his children after himself as far as I know. But the Christian Hensley you reported on, as you stated, may have been related to him. Thank you so much, Donna |

Hi Wayne, Thanks for all the tidbits! I found a lot of it real interesting. I will be checking it out at genealogy.com. The following may be related to my OTHER Levi Morris line. I have 2, lucky me! My second Morris line was from OH, then Pike Co., IL. Actually, I believe I will one day end up finding out that both lines connect, & that Levi Morris (Mathew's father) was the son of the Levi Morris of Pike Co., IL. ***** 1870 census entry for a Calvin Morris from OH living in Pike Co. IL--maybe a younger brother to Mathew? Calvin is working/living on the farm of Taylor M. Cofs or Cufs as a farm laborer. 1870 Census, IL, Pike Co., Fairmount, Fishhook P.O., Sheet 26, Page 107b, Roll 269, Book 1, 21 July 1870 Calvin Morris, 36, M, W, Farm Laborer, OH
