Although there are many more early marriages, I stopped at any later than
1840, some of these could possibly be siblings to Rachel Baker and you might
want to see about following these lines

Although there are very many other Coxes, you might be able to follow the
line of one of these to connect to Rachel Cox who married William Baker,
then perhaps a connection to Rachel Cox Baker as the mother to your Rachel
Baker.

Melody--
You have made me think about this.
Maybe John Allen Baker's wife Rachael isn't Rachael Baker after all. I was unsure when a researcher first gave me this imformation, but then since he seemed so sure of himself I swallowed it hook line and sinker!!
Now I'm back to square one.
Rachel Who? was married to John Allen Hagler.
I had wondered why in the world they were up in Warren county anyhow.

The idea behind accepting information from others is not to believe it all...just keep trying to prove or disprove the information...and use what is given to you...INCLUDING FAMILY TREE MAKER FAMILY TREE CDs as leads.  FTM sell those CDs from information posted by researchers such as the one who gave you that information, but they aren't guaranteed accurate.  They advertise as if you can trust them to accuracy, "I added a whole new line to my family tree,"  but unless you have proven your information, it can be considered nothing more than leads.  Few if any researchers deliberatly mislead others and even leads are more than some of us have.  Remember that the person who has shared the information I posted, may be in error, and your informant may be right.

There are some who will acknowledge that they prefer to compile leads, something one person called "collecting unverified lines."  That is fine as long as we all know nothing has been proven.  I took out a number of generations of my Hensleys when I realized one Benjamin Hensley couldn't have achieved all the things he was given credit for achieving [buying, marrying, purchasing land and more].

From census records, age 28 in 1850, it seems Rachel was born around 1822.  That would make her married at 15, seeing that the marriage was late in the year; possible, but not likely.  That 1850 census shows Sarah at what looks to be 15 years of age which would mean she was born prior to their marriage.  Since it looks like there is 5 years difference between Sarah and the next child, I would look for an earlier marriage as the mother of Sarah, and Rachel being the mother starting with the 10 year old.  It may be more possible that the only child who is actually theirs together is the 5 month old son, Thomas J.

I checked the marriage index for a marriage for a Thomas J. Hagler.  There was one when this Thomas would have been 23 years old, but the marriage would have taken place before complete records were made.  A second Thomas Hagler wedding took place in 1898, which may or may not
have been a second or third marriage for the child of John and Rachel Hagler.  But it may be worth writing for the marriage record.

HAGLER, THOMAS            PHILLIPS, PHOEBE A             11/13/1898    /              JACKSON

Evidently there was another Thomas Hagler in Jackson County, because one married in 1863, too early to be your subject.

Also, since John was listed as Allen in the 1860 census, I would try to track down the spouses shown here.  His wife was Mary in the 1860 census.

HAGLER, ALLEN                     LINDSEY, IDA                         04/01/1888    /              JACKSON

The above info is the info I already had on Rachel.

I have come to the conclusion however, that Rachel Baker is the wrong Rachel. Someone along the line assumed it was the same John Hagler who married Rachel Baker.

However---the ancestor I do know for sure is the name on the above census record: Sarah Hagler.

Another However!! I discovered that THIS Sarah Hagler is apparently MY Sarah Hagler's second cousin--same age, born in the same county!!

I found this out, because g-g-grandmother Sarah did me the wonderful favor of marrying a third time when she was 52 years old. She very conveniently was married in the county where I currently reside during a time when we had a good county clerk who did what he was supposed to do and recorded names of parents!! Yahoo for me!! I found out that her parents weren't John and Rachel, as I had assumed (wink wink!), but Isaac Hagler and Amy Hill. So, I know just a little bit more about my ancestry today than I knew a few days ago.

There is another Sarah Hagler close to the same age in Jackson County in 1850 who is living with an older couple Peter and Sarah Hagler--who happened to have had a son Isaac who died when he was in his 30's. THIS Sarah is mine!! all MINE!!! It's gotta be!!

ALSO!! The senior Sarah Hagler, who was born in the 1790's is buried right here in southern Illinois--cool, huh?? Actually both Sarahs are.

SAGA,

This is great news...glad you concluded this so quickly, since I was pretty
doubtful myself. That sounds a little like a crack to me...or was it
Jericho all over again?

Saga,
My name is Jay Belz and I have a Sara and Peter Hagler in Illinois who had a son Isaac.  Peter's father's name was Isaac as well as Peter's son.  I am not sure if this Sara is the same as your Sara.  But if they are we may be distant cousins.  Let's compare some notes and see.

do you have any relatives/ancestors that lived in Springfield.IL in 1940's and 50's, on Sangamon Ave. I think, across from the gas storage tanks?  Bud Baker was my dad's best friend, had a wife Katherine and two boys.  Oldest would be about 65-66 and the youngest would be about 62-63. Let me know,
