Hi Folks;
I'm not sure when this message will be received by any of you since MSN has really been trashing my postings to site lately. For the record this is Thus May 15.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Carolyn for pinch-hitting last week and to also express my appreciation for the increased participation of our membership at large. Its very gratifying.
It looks as though Melody and Carolyn have done a bang-up job on Pam's Brickwall--Pam what say you? And speaking of Carolyn, she's offered to help me keep the Brickwall postings in chronological order (MSN in a LINUX environment can do very funny things).
We were supposed to move on to Ruth this week but she informed me that her Brickwall has already been tackled. Ruth does this still hold true? Assuming that that's still the case, this week's Brickwall belongs to (drumroll please) Jim. :
Jim originally posted his Brickwall, entitled: "Thomas T. Poor" on 22 June 2002. Jim do you want us to try to tackle old Tom again? I know we found some census data on him and Napoleon.
Jim's posting reads "Seeking date of b. & d., place of burial of: Thomas T.Poor, believed to be born in VA abt 1817, went west, KY, MO, & IL. Married Elizabeth Booth on December 5, 1843 in Pike County IL. Resided in Calhoun county, IL (Hamburg District) Children: William A., Napoleon B. Respina (Respiner) - this is my gggrandfather. Thanks - JIP" Update on 12 July 2002 " For those that are NEW MEMBERS since my last posting. I am seeking the birth date, death date and burial place of THOMAS T. POOR, who is my gggrandfather. The only VALID DATA that I have is that he was married to Elizabeth Booth, was married in Pike county, IL and was married on December 5, 1843. He was listed as being 33 years of age in the 1850 census and his wife, Elizabeth was listed as being 35 years of age in the 1850 census. At that time they were living in the Hamburg, Calhoun County, IL area. It has been said that he was born in VA and move west, through KY, then to MO and on to IL. Others say that he was possibly born in Woodford County, KY - No verification on either of these places of birth. He had children by the names of: William A., Napoleon B., and Respina or Respiner. Any information that one could provide me with regarding birth, death and place of burial would be very much appreciated. Thank you - JIP"
***** Next week, unless I screwed up, we'll be featuring Pastlink with "POTTORFF/BOTTORFF--Sangamon Co. Poor Farm" posted on 26 Nov 2002. (Carolyn, please correct me if I got the order wrong). Pastlink, since several members responded to your Brickwall message do you need to update?
Pastlink's posting reads: "Where would those that were housed in the Alms house in Buffalo, Ill., Sangamon County, been buried by the County upon their death? Is there a Cemetery just for the County Poor Farm? My g-grandfather Taylor Scott Pottorff (spelled several ways during his stay at the Alms house 1892-1895) died ?March 6, 1895. I think he may have been moved from the Alms house-March 1st- to Jacksonville State Hospital because of his illness. Did the hospital have their own burial location? Are there records of death by coroner somewhere in the county files?"
Update on 4 Feb 2003: "Granny Mary: I would really appreciate your help with newpaper articles. I do not want you to spend a lot of your time on one of my projects but, should you, while doing your research, run into any of these obits, I would 'stand on my head' , if I could. I do not know if any of these will give me additional information, as these names are not in the immediate family of Taylor Scott Pottorff who died ?March 6 1895 in the County Poor Farm at Buffalo. Taylor's father was Collins Bottorff/Pottorff of IN death place unknown. I have the Sangamon records for the ALMS House County Poor Farm from 1888-1897, Marriage Records of Sangamon 1878-1889-1890-1899 printed by the SCGS and the Babeuf's 1882/83 Directory of Sangamon county. Obits tend to give a little more detail as to who the family was. I do know that they lived around New Berlin IL. I have visited IL and tried to find information but just doesn't seem to be enough time in a week to do all the research one would like. POTTORFF ANDREW J M/W UNK 0400090 1931-07-28 JASPER SMALLWOOD TWP 31-08-10 POTTORFF HARVEY E M/W UNK 0047872 1918-12-14 SANGAMON SPRINGFIELD 18-12-16 ?think this is the son of Taylor's bother (James) POTTORFF EVA R F/W UNK 0800166 1932-08-18 RICHLAND DENVER TWP 32-08-19 ?if this is Eva B. she would be 1/2 sister to Taylor's son (Herbert) POTTORFF EARL MADDISON M/W UNK 2840908 1928-10-17 SANGAMON SPRINGFIELD 28-10-19 POTTORFF BERTHA F/W UNK 0047813 1918-12-13 SANGAMON SPRINGFIELD 18-12-16"
***** Following Pastlink will be Joan with "ROBERTS - Info before the Chicago Fire" posted on 2 Dec 2002. Joan can you provide any more details?
Joan's posting reads: " I am trying to find information on Robert T Roberts, b. Wales 1840. He was in Chicago in 1870 according to census records. I am trying to find out when he came to the USA and with who. Is there anywhere to look other than Cook County? "
***** After we finish these three I'll try redress some of the injustices of the past and begin addressing those Brickwalls we missed along the way (including mine). According to Carolyn, the following postings need to be bumped up to the top of our list. If your Brickwall posting is in this list please let me know whether it still needs attention and/or provide us with updates.

Hi all! I have a big favor to ask..........I am on several genealogy email lists. On one of the sites there was a lady that had a site for Heritage Quest. Was it on this site? If so, could you send it again? Thanks so much, cindy

Mel:
Thanks for the info on Respiner - Don't know whether this is the individual that was living with Thomas T., Poor, along with William A., and Napoleon B. Poor or not. I'll check into this in more detail if possible. Thanks JIP |

Cindy;
You may want to check the site for the Arlington Heights Memorial Library. They have a program which grants free access to out-of-staters for a number of heir on-line indexes--including HeritageQuest. URL is: http://www.ahml.lib.il.us/

Hi Quiltybug - here it is again... Hope it is fo some value to you! From: small (Original Message) | Sent: 21/05/2003 7:29 PM | I don't know if this is new to the rest of you folks; but, it was a real find for me the other night. It is a backdoor into a site that allows you to search the USA census images online for all years except 1900 & 1930. It does not require a membership or user logon if you go in this way. Go to the Harrisburg Library Genealogy Room site at http://www.sirin.lib.il.us/docs/mcl/docs/lib/genealogy.htm and click on the HeritageQuest Online link. If you go to the HeritageQuest site, you need a user name and password. I did not "investigate" so I do not know what is involved in becoming a registered user. Hope this helps someone as much as it did me. Shauna | |

URL is: http://www.ahml.lib.il.us/> Hi Wayne, I went to the above site, but unless I just didn't understand or do it right, it tells me that a non-resident has to do the following: Registration for Nonresidents"Nonresidents of Arlington Heights must register in person at the Library's Catalog & Internet Desk. You will need either a valid public library card or a photo I.D. to register. Specifics can be found on the registration form. You can print and fill out this form at home and bring it with you to the Library. When you register for Remote Access Service, you will receive a user name and password to log in to the Service. If you forget your user name or password, you must return to the Library's Catalog & Internet Desk. For security reasons, Library staff cannot tell you your user name or password over the phone." Traveling to this library would be impossible for me to do. Is there a way of getting access without registering at the library itself? Donna....in the Land of OZ, USA

The 1900 and 1930 are online there just not index. To find them and any others that are not indexed, just go to browse, upper left hand corner. Then pick year, state, county and district, or just start reading the county :) I'm just happy to find the 1930 online.

Hi Donna;
Since I applied while I was in Chicago, I wasn't aware of their personal appearance policy. I guess that means that when my year is up I won't be able to renew. Sorry, Wayne.
P.S. It might be worthwhile to call or e-mail them anyway and see if you can't finagle something.
