Hi There Folks;

Its Thursday and you know what that means.

Carolyn assures me that Pastlink is more than satisfied with what we were able to provide her and so this week we turn to Joan with "ROBERTS - Info before the Chicago Fire" posted on 2 Dec 2002.

Joan's posting reads:
" I am trying to find information on Robert T ROBERTS, b. Wales 1840. He was in Chicago in 1870 according to census records. I am trying to find out when he came to the USA and with who. Is there anywhere to look other than Cook County? "

Update on 29 May 2003:
"Robert Thomas ROBERTS b. abt 1840 in Wales, was found in the 1870 census in the 15th Ward, Chicago. He was there with his wife, Mary Jane (Jenny) Burton ROBERTS and their 1st daughter Clara, b. 1869. Mary Jane Burton ROBERTS was b. 1849 in Kane County, IL, probably in Plato Center or Udina. She was the daughter of John and Lucy Fay Burton. Mary was an orphan at about age 7 and lived with her uncle, William Roberts.

I have most of the gaps filled in after 1869. Robert T. Roberts & family moved to Tazewell Co by 1880, LaSalle Co by 1890, Arkansas by 1897, and Texas by 1900. It is very strange that I can't find a marriage date between Robert T & Mary J. I am also wondering if Robert T came to America as a child with family or as a young man alone. I have no information on parents or siblings for him.

*****
Next week we'll turn our efforts to redressing past injustices, The first of the overlooked brickwalls is that of MaryAnn1950 who first posted her brickwall, "Illinois SIMPSON's Fred, Earl, George, Nathaniel, Betsey, Nora, Robert ", on 31 July 2002. Mary Ann's original message reads:
"I have come as far as I can in getting info on these people. Does anyone have any info? Please let me know if you do."

Update 29 January 2003--entitled "SIMPSON" reads:
"Looking for SIMPSON's who came from New York and most of them settled in Illinois. Nathaniel, William, Asa, and some others."

Mary Ann, we could really use some date ranges on these SIMPSONs to give us a place to start.

*****
The week after that will be Carrie with: "Maybe you can help?", dated 27 August 2002. Carrie's brickwall message reads:
"I am looking for anyone who can tell me anything about Walter Aaron BOREM. He was born in 1943 and lived a long time in Hammond, Indiana. He would have graduated school in 1961 maybe Hammond Tech. He died in Florida in November 1990. This is my sister's biological father, She never was able to meet him while he was alive. We tracked down his Mom (Martha 'Mike' BOREM) to Wisconsin just find out she passed away as well in 1995. Her brother Joseph MARTELL lived in Hammond but passed away as well. I keep hitting brick walls for information. His sister's name is Carol Lee BOREM but I get no answers from her. I really just want a photo of the man for my sister. She wants more than anything to be able to see who he looks like. If you have any information or know anyone who can help me. Or heck any ideas on tracking down a photo please email me at [email protected]."

Updates 16 & 18 September 2002--entitled "New Surname", read:
"Walter AaronBOREM was born in 1943. He was a sophomore at at Hammond Tech <which I believe is gone now> in 1960. He entered the Navy with a friend named Butch REINHEART <sp> who later passed on by his own hand. He hung out with Sharon DEERING GAMBLIN. He died in Nov 1990 somewhere in Florida. Someone he knew has got to be alive somewhere."

This one will require something other than our usual searches. Lets see what we can do for Carrie and her sister.

I will also send this message to all 3 ladies personal accounts.

Cheers, Wayne

Based on what you said about the Burton's being dead by the time Mary was 7, I decided to look at the census for 1840 & 1850 with the following results. Cheers, Wayne

LAKE COUNTY INDIANA OBITUARY INDEX 1960-1970

BOREM, Matilda          84     Hammond,IN                 11/22/1963             St. Joseph HA    Hammond,IN

48 year old Matilda Borem is found in 1930 Lake County, Indiana, Hammond with children Robert and Dorothy.    There were 17 other Borems in the county at that time, all in Hammond.

22 year old Tilman Borem was born 1908 in Mexico.  His wife of one year, Sibyl [sic] was born about 1912.

William E Borem, age 43 and wife Gladys or Glada are very interesting...one of their children was Aaron W. Borem born 1920.  Other sons are William, Sherman and Fred, ages 19, 18 and 16. There was a 2 year old Vera, as well.

Then there was Arthur and Edna Borem ages 36 and 30.  They had an 8 year old daughter, Margaret

Lastly there was the Vernon Borem family.  Vernon was 36 in 1930, his wife, Edna, 34.  Tillman was 15, Daniel 13, and Bert 11.

In 1920, Matilda was also head of the household, but before I get to her, there was a Walter Borem family who seems to be the William above,
Borem, Walter E or C
Glada age 27, wife
Willis son 9
Sherman son 7
Fred son 5
John S FATHER 52
Emma Mother J 49

They lived at 276 Pine Street, Hammond.  Walter was a carpenter.

Matilda was 39 in 1920, living at 260 Cannon? Street.  There were 4 children living with her, Dorothy and Robert as before and also Charles and maybe Alice, the older two.  I can't be certain of either name, but the one I call Charles was 14, and Alice 12.

The third Borem family found was that of Arthur and Edna, with no children.  It looks as though they live at 226 Cedar Street.

A connection may be the researcher that I found at Ancestry who posted the information on Matilda Major Borem.  His e-mail address is..
.........................................................................................................................................................................................
I believe this to be the above Sherman, whom I suspect is the uncle to Walter Aaron Borem

I went to mapquest to see if I could figure out the location and come up with a highschool in the neighborhood. I found it interesting that Cedar street was a block west of Pine.  There doesn't seem to be a Cannon Street.

Sorry Carolyn, messages are coming in so helter skelter, and without dates that I am just grabbing and replying.  I didn't know I was two weeks ahead..whew...thought I was two month behind.

Pat,

The Brainstorm comes from the posts on the Brick Walls Bd, whatever remains after the Brainstorming process is still a wall which is posted to the Brick Walls List.  We do have members whom do their ernest to assist folks on the Brick Walls Bd.  Which would save us from having to Brainstorm their wall, however there is a deficiency in assessing whether or not individuals have crumbled the walls they posted from the help on the Brick Walls Bd.  I have calculated the waiting list to be about 2 years back logged based on 1 week per wall.  That is to say there are 83 members waiting on this list.

I did not readily find your post on the Brick Walls Bd.  I did however find a post on Brick Walls List.  I will have to evaluate your input on the Brick Walls List.  The first problem I have is with the posting date, it doesn't mesh with your membership date.  Evidence below.  The best I can offer you is using the membership date as the first possible date you posted this brick and insert you into the list as if you posted the first day you joined.  I feel this would be fair to all.

Hi!  I don't mind you questioning my research.  I'm not always right.  But in this case, I am.  My John & Lucy Burton died in the 1850's leaving Mary J an orphan and living with her uncle, William Burton.  John & Lucy Burton are both buried in Udina Cemetery in the family plot.

Thanks for trying!  It wasn't exactly what I was looking for.  Our Robert T. Roberts seems to be invisible before 1870.  The people I talked to in Chicago said that most records from late 1860 up to 1871 were lost in the Chicago fire.  If Robert T married Mary J. in Chicago, the marriage records and any other pertinant information were probably lost.

Thanks again for all your hard work!
Joan

Hi Joan;

Does that mean that the 1870 Chicago Census entry which reflects a Canadian birth for Mary Jane the wrong one? And in that case there should be another Robert & Mary Jane Roberts in the1870 IL census?

Thats what's confusing me. The 1870 census entry you originally cited says that Mary was from Canada.

Cheers, Wayne
