Hi Folks;
I've tried to send this several times with no luck. Maybe the 3rd try will be the charm.
Well its Thursday again and hopefully Pat has gotten something useful on her MINER-BULLARD -JENKS query.
This week's brickwall is Dale with "STEWARTS of Illinois, Indiana", posted on 28 August 2002, and reads: "My brick wall for my STEWART family is with Paulina STEWART She is my G-G-Grandmother. I do not know her husband's name. She was supposed to have been born in Indiana in abt. 1835. She had two children that I know of: Julia Ann, b. 1853 and Daniel b. abt 1855. They were listed in the 1860 Census of Montgomery Co. Illinois. Both children are listed as being born in Illinois. No husband was listed. She later married a Thomas CALVIN or COLVIN on Aug. 21, 1863. Date of death not known."
An update from 14 September 2002 reads: "Can anyone tell me if someone who worked for the railroads would be listed on the SSDI listing after their death? Several members of my WHEELER family worked for different railroads and so far I have not had much luck in locating them. If they are not listed on the SSDI, is there a separate list available that would show them???"
To which Melody responded. "Dale, I have found many of my railroad working relatives in the Social Security Death Index. One thing I noticed which confounds matters is that I cannot use the state of issuance, and maybe some of the other search terms. Melody"
A second update, from 14 September 2002, this one to the Surnames list reads: "I am actively seeking anyone with information on my WHEELER family tree, I currently live in Southern Illinois. My families came from Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, the Carolinas, the Virginias and many points east;
A third update, posted this past week reads: "...I have had one possible lead on my brick wall. Found some research attributed to "Maurice Bruce and James Mclauchlin" that may indicate that Paulina or Perlina STEWART had been married to a Joseph STEWART or STEWARD. I have also found census information that shows Paulina and her two children living next door to the NAILL family. There has been indication that this was part of her family and her maiden name was NAILL or NAILE. After her first husbands death, records show she married a Thomas CALVIN or COLVIN. The above researchers show her having many more children. I am unsure that there is a direct connection, but the simularity in names forces me to check it out in greater detail. Any help in finding more information would be greatly appreciated, even if it means that the above information was not correct. Dale"
***** After Dale is Lynne with "HENRICHS family of Cook County", posted on September 6 2001, reads: "Seeking any and all possible information concerning this family. Mine came from PA to Cook County in the late 1800's."
To which I had responded with some census and other data which may have been relevant.
An update from 18 September 2002 reads: "My 3rd great grandparents were Sophia DRIFS and Joseph HEINRICHS. They came from Prussia and settled in Schuylkill County, PA around 1867. Joseph died in 1869 and Sophia supposedly relocated to Cook County, IL. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I am lost from this point. Can anyone help me? I sure would appreciate any leads."
Melody responded with: "You might want to try your search by going through one of their grandchildren-- HENRICHS, farmer, P.O. Numidia, was born in Prussia, Germany, February 6, 1847, a son of Joseph and Sophia (DRIFS) HENRICKS, natives of Germany. His father followed farming in the old country, and in 1867 with his family took passage on a sailing vessel at Hamburg, and landed in New York after a voyage of six weeks. They came direct from New York to Ashland, Schuylkill Co., Penn., where they settled, and there our subject and his father worked in the Big Mine Run mines for about three years. Our subject then learned the carpenter's trade, and followed it until moving to his present residence, with the exception of about two years, when he again worked in the mines. His father died in 1869 in Ashland, but his mother is still living and resides in Cook County, Ill. They were the parents of nine children, six of whom are still living: Charles; Rechor, wife of Joe BLANCH; John; Caroline, wife of Charles BLANCHE; Mona and Sophia. In 1880 our subject bought the farm where he now lives, consisting of 108 acres. April 8, 1869, he married Minnie HANS, and the following children were born to them: Frederick, John (deceased), Charles, Hannah (deceased), William, Christian, August, Martyn and Emma. Mr. and Mrs. HENRICKS are members of the Lutheran Church, and he is also a member of the Grange. (History of Columbia and Montour Counties Pennsylvania, Battle, 1887, pg. 494-5)"
A second update from 16 January 2003 reads: "Am especially interested in Sophia (DRIFS) HENRICHS, wife of Joseph HENRICHS. They came to America from Prussia in the 1860's, settled in Pennsylvania. He died after being here only a couple of years and she relocated with the younger children to Cook County, IL. I believe that she was still living in Cook County as late as 1887. I found a biography on her son, my 3ggrandfather that was published in 1887 stating that "she now lives in Cook County, IL" This has been my brick wall for several years. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Lynne"
A third update from 17 January 2003 reads: Joseph and Sophia HENRICHS emigrated from Prussia to PA in 1867. They brought the following children with them: Charles (b. 1847) Rechor (b. ~1850) md. Joe BLANCH John (b.~1856) Caroline (b.~1859) md. Charles BLANCH Mona (b. ~1860) Wilamina (b.~1862) Sophia (b.~1865)
Joseph died in 1869. After his death, Sophie and most of the children moved to Cook County, IL.. Charles, my 2great-grandfather, stayed in PA with his new bride, Minnie HANS. I think all the others moved with Sophie. I would imagine that the Joseph and Sophie HINRICHS found in Germans to America, 1850-1874 would be a good lead. That last name has been butchered all of my life. I have found my grandfather and his father under some strange spellings in census records that I know are my family. I have lots of information on Charles and his family, but nothing more than what I have shared for his parents and siblings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Lynne (Henrichs) Chick"
A fourth update, sent this past week, reads: "...Sophia is still a mystery to me after she moved to Cook County. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.Lynne Chick"
***** Of the next two people in line, one opted out and the other has apparently dropped off the site so that leaves ME! with: "HENDRICKSON Brickwall--JAAKS, HERMAN, LOMAN, NORDIN, WIBORG", originally posted on 19 October 2002 it reads: "I've got plenty of brickwalls but this one is a doozy. My maternal grandmother Evelyn b. to Martha JAAKS & (fnu) HENDRICKSON (sp?) was adopted at or shortly after birth by her maternal aunt Bertha & her husband. Inquiries to Cook County Clerk's office reveals no birth certificate for her under any of the names. However, my real brickwall is g-grandad HENDRICKSON (sp?). I have been able to find absolutely no info. Data I have on other person's mentioned follows. HENDRICKSONs: 1) Martha JAAKS--b. 10/09/1878 Chicago d. ?? prob. Chicago m. (fnu) Hendrickson ?? prob Chicago, worked as nanny and maid. HERMANs --as of 1920 they lived at 2074 Stave St., Chicago: 1) Bertha JAAKS- b. 22/Apr/1879 Chicago d. (15/Aug/1921) Chicago m. Matthew Herman Sr. ??? prob Chicago. They had a son Matthew Jr. ("Sonny") . Bertha was a tailor 2) Matthew HERMAN Sr-- b. ??? prob. Chicago d. (11/Nov/1935) Chicago. His 2nd wife was Vivian (lnu) who m. Sonny after his death. Matthew Sr. was a milkman. 3) Evelyn HENDRICKSON/HERMAN b. 21/Apr/1907 Chicago d. 30/Oct/1990 Chicago Parents Martha JAAKS & (fnu) HENDRICKSON (sp?) Evelyn held several jobs but worked longest at the Spaulding or Wilson's Sporting Goods factory. First husband was George Lee CONRAD by whom she had 5 daughters. 2nd husband was Jos. J. GILLOFFO Jr. 4) Matthew "Sonny" HERMAN Jr. b. 1909/10 Chicago d. ??? of carbon monoxide poisoning m. Vivian ?? HERMAN ??? Chicago. 2nd wife name unknown. Note the JAAKS sisters were the daughters of Hermann H. JAAKS, a Chicago saloon keep, and Magdalena LOMAN(n). Other sisters include Ida NORDIN, Rose WIBORG, Annie and poss. a half sister, Hattie, by a 2nd wife."
An update posted on 17 May 2003 reads: "I now know for sure that Martha JAAKS was NOT married when she had my grandmother Evelyn. She apparently married Mr. HENDRICKSON at a later date. That means that Evelyn's birth name should have been JAAKS, or HERMANN or the name of the mysterious father (less likely is GAHDE or BENSON). I also have strong evidence (newspaper picture), that Martha JAAKS and Martha GAHDE were cousins and not the same person as I had previously surmised. I also have confirmation that Evelyn went to City Hall and changed all official records pertaining to my mother and her 4 sisters to reflect a maiden name of GILLOFFO. My Aunt Betty refused to accept this and still uses her original CONRAD birth certificate which indicates that her father, George, was b. in Woodstock, IL (McHenry Co.).
So, in short, I still don't know/have: 1) immigration records nor specific origin w/in Prussia, for Hermann H. JAAKS, Hans JAAKS, Dorothea JAAKS (nee GOETTCHER) Magdalena JAAKS (nee LOMAN), Mary LOMAN, Katherine LOMAN, John GAHDE or Dora GAHDE (nee LOMAN); 2) who Evelyn Viola HERMANN's real father (my g-granddad) was; 3) solid evidence that my g-granddad, Fred CONRAD's, parents were John and Mary CONRAD (John was a cooper from Switzerland); 4) specific POB/DOB &POD/DOD for Minnie CONRAD (nee WINDT), probably my g-grandma (b. ca. 1886 in WI), or who her parents were; 5) specific POB/DOB & POD/DOD for my granddad, George Lee Conrad (b. Dec 1901), or his brother, Ernest; 6) POB/DOD of my g-grandfather, Melville C. GREEN (b. in La Salle, IL. ca. 1867) 7) POB/DOB & DOD/POD of Carrie GREEN (nee Anderson) my g-grandma , b. ca, 1872 in Canada; 8) maiden name of Carrie GREEN's (nee ANDERSON) mother, Mary ANDERSON b. in Canada; 9) immigration data or DOB/POB for g-g-granddad, Charles GREEN (b. ca. 1826 in England); 10) maiden name, specific POB/DOB for g-g-grandma Paulina GREEN (b. ca. 1827 in NY); 11) immigration data for g-g-grand Charles ANDERSON (from Norway via Canada). 12) any data on Jennie JOHNSON, my grandmother, Mildred STRAIGHT's (nee GREEN), cousin--Jennie was a fairly famous vocalist in Chicago; This despite heroic efforts by Ruth, Melody, Leslie and Carolyn. I would love to have any one of these holes filled. But still, I know one heck of a lot more than I did 2 years ago when I started this mad pavanne."
I will update and drastically condense this list w/in the next two weeks (I promise). Cheers, Wayne

Hi Pam;
Thanks for the info. The youngest son, Melville, is my g-granddad. One of his sisters (Laurena?) m. a John Johnson in La Salle Co. I found both his family and Charles's family living next door to each other in Chicago in 1880--although I couldn't make out the street name. Anyway, John & Laurena? had a daughter named Jennie who was supposed to have been a famous vocalist in Chicago--reportedly could break glasses with her voice. Other than the 1880 census data, I've never found anything on her though.
I don't have much info on this line either (story of my life--the Straights seem to have been the only ones who led a reasonably normal family life). When Melville's wife, Carrie Anderson, got sick, he ran off. She died shortly after, ca. 1911, and both of their girls were put into an orphanage. The younger daughter, Ruth, was adopted by a wealthy Long Island family named Flynn. My grandma, Mildred, had to finish her childhood as a ward of the state. By 1920, Mildred was married to Herbert Straight and living in Boyd Co. KY. I have yet to find Melville after 1900-- believe it or not, Melville Green was a very popular name.
Also, I've investigated the possibility that Paulina's maiden name may have been Mulrick (this based on the name of the other mason who lived with them in 1860). Found nothing I could put my finger on though.
Again thanks for the old college try--the more people who try to deciper the older girls' names the better chance I have of getting it right.. Cheers, Wayne |

3) http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/e/a/Melinda-M-Weaver/GENE4-0001.html Ancestors of Melinda Moore Weaver [*] Updated August 27, 2002
The major surnames that I'm researching are Weaver, Rouse, Tull, Weintraut, Fischer, Nail, Wray /Ray, Moore, Eckstein, Roos, Wade, Hill, and Holihan. There are many more and I'm sure that this list of names will continue to grow as I go along. I got interested in doing this research because of my husband's great-grandfather, Richard Henry Rouse. For years, I have known that he had died on the Titanic. For Christmas a few years ago, I bought my husband a book about the Titanic for his stocking. There was a paragraph or two about his great-grandfather. We had never seen or heard mention of him before, so this sparked our interest to know more. His grandmother never talked about her father until shortly before her death. She was only 8 or 9 when he boarded the Titanic. It must have been too painful for her to talk about. A few years before she died, she did tell her story. In fact, she was interviewed by the Star Magazine because she had lived in America for 70+ years. She had raised her family, worked and paid taxes, etc. She applied for a passport so that she could travel to England and visit the town where she grew up. When she applied, she found out that she was not an American citizen. She managed to contact the right people and they checked into things and in a short time, she was made a citizen. When the Star Magazine interviewed her, she told that story and the story of how she came to America. She said that her father had lost his job and was coming to America for work. He was to send for her and her mother later.
In my research, I have discovered that he had worked in the coal mines until the strike. He tried his hand at several different jobs, but was unable to provide a decent living for his family. His step-daughter, Harriett Maylum, had been sending money weekly to help supplement their income. She had told him of a job opportunity in Cleveland, Ohio and he decided to accept it. She sent him the money to purchase his ticket and he boarded the Titanic. He died, along with the many other poor souls, on April 15, 1912. White Star Line provided free passage to America for the widows, as well as, a small pension. They came to America three months later. [***] Melinda Marie (Moore) Weaver 430 W. John Nail and Martha Ray Nail
JOHN NAIL (1799-1875), son of Henry & Mary Keller Nail and MARTHA RAY NAIL (1803-1865), daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth Pierce Ray John Nail, the oldest son of Henry and Mary Keller Nail, was born in Rowan County, North Carolina, in 1799. In approximately 1820, he married Martha Ray Nail, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Pierce Ray. In 1821, while they were still living in North Carolina, their first child was born, a daughter whom they named Methana. In November 1822, John bought land in Indiana from the U.S. government and, shortly thereafter, he and his wife and daughter moved to Shelby County, preceding by approximately one year the migration to Indiana of his parents, Henry and Mary Keller Nail and the remainder of their family. The rest of John and Martha's children were born in Indiana. In approximately 1852, John Nail and his wife, Martha Ray Nail, and their family moved from Shelby County, Indiana, to Mongomery County, Illinois. John's mother, Mary Keller Nail, who had been a widow since 1827, moved from Indiana to Illinois with John and Martha to live out her last years with her oldest son and his family. John Nail, Martha Ray Nail, and Mary Keller Nail are all buried in the Cherry Grove Cemetery in Butler Grove Township, Montgomery County, Illinois. As the first of the following two excerpts from early historical documents indicates, John Nail and his family figured prominently in the early religious history of their new community in Illinois. Family tradition holds that John Nail donated the land for Cherry Grove Cemetery. Although we have been unable to verify this conclusively, the abstracts in possession of the current owners document that John Nail did own that piece of property from 1852 until 1866, so the inference seems quite reasonable. -------------------------------------------------------------------- (From 'Some Centenarians of Butler Grove Township, Montgomery Co., Illinois, 1898', "A Brief History of the Village of Butler", by Rev. T.E. Spelman.) "CHERRY GROVE M.E. CHURCH" We find that as early as the year 1843, there was existing a church with a considerable membership in the community now called Cherry Grove, three and a half miles NW of Butler. Just what its membership was, and how long it had existed as a Church we have not ascertained. But from some cause, probably deaths and removals, this Church so declined that in a few years, there remained of it but a feeble (sic.) remnant. About the year 1852, it was recognized, and probably for the first time, elected regular Trustees, and assumed the name of Cherry Grove Church. The following, so far as we are able to give them, are the names of those who assumed the responsibilities of membership at the re-organization: John Nail, Mrs. Martha Nail, Nathan Nail, Mrs. Sarah Nail, Mrs. Susan Williams, Anderson Walker and wife, Menassah Came and wife, Wm. Williams and wife, James Roberts and wife, and Mrs. Sarah Baker. The congregation, in an early day, worshiped in a private dwelling house upon the farm now belonging to D.C. Burris. The building now known as Cherry Grove Church was erected about the year 1856. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (From 'Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois, Volume II, 1918', edited by Bateman and Selby, Munsell Publishers, Chicago, pp. 854-855.) "EARLY CHURCHES" There were three early churches founded in Butler Grove Township, outside of Butler, the first being known as the Montgomery County Methodist Episcopal Church, which was held in a church building about five miles north of Hillsboro and about the same distance northeast of Butler. It was organized in 1836 and is now in good working condition and regularly supplied with ministers sent by the Methodist conference. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Butler, also known as Ware's Grove Church, was organized December 24, 1860 by Rev. J.... Livingood, with a membership of five, namely: Jacob Scherer, Henry Meisenheimer, Mrs. Rachel Meisenheimer, Mrs. Mary Scherer and Mrs. Rebecca Cross. In 1862, they erected a church edifice. The subsequent history of this church, with its pastors, is as follows: Rev. Livingood, J.B. Cromer, George C. Cromer and for the last twenty or more years by Rev. Ezra Keller of Hillsboro. While there are larger churches in the county, there is no more devoted congregation than that of Ware's Grove Church. The other early church was known as the Cherry Grove Methodist Episcopal Church, which was established in 1838 and located about three and one-half miles northwest of Butler. It was reorganized as the Cherry Grove church in 1851. This country church for many years was a prominent center of religious interest in the township but as the village of Butler and other neighboring communities built churches more accessible to the people and better equipped, naturally the rural church ceased to attract and after a period of relaxation, the Church house was sold by order of the Conference and the membership scattered to the various surrounding churches. Hi Mel;
I have the marriage record for Melville & Carrie. Unfortunately, very little data was required or given on marriage records at that time in Cook Co. history--names, ages, name of county clerk, name of pastor, name of church (already checked that one--no records), date of license, date of marriage, that's it.
I don't have a clue what Henry Nordin's folks names were. The earliest that I found him was 1900 when he was living with an aunt in Chicago.
I don't think I had the M.C. Green at Langley Ave. although I have perused the Voter Registrations pretty heavily--evidently one that I missed.
My Hermann Jaaks got married in Jefferson Twp. in 1877 so that must be another one--makes things more interesting doesn't it--I have records of at least 3 & possibly 4 Hans Jaaks/Jaacks in the Chicago area.
Thanks, Wayne |
