Hi Folks;

Its Thursday again and I feel confident that we collectively blew a great big hole in Dale's brickwall. We will, therefore move on to Lynne whose brickwall, entitled "HENRICHS family of Cook County", was posted on September 6 2001, and reads: "Seeking any and all possible information concerning this family. Mine came from PA to Cook County in the late 1800's."

An update from 18 September 2002 reads: "My 3rd great grandparents were Sophia DRIFS and Joseph HENRICHS. They came from Prussia and settled in Schuylkill County, PA around 1867. Joseph died in 1869 and Sophia supposedly relocated to Cook County, IL. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I am lost from this point. Can anyone help me? I sure would appreciate any leads."

Melody responded with: "You might want to try your search by going through one of their grandchildren-- HENRICHS, farmer, P.O. Numidia, was born in Prussia, Germany, February 6, 1847, a son of Joseph and Sophia (DRIFS) HENRICKS, natives of Germany. His father followed farming in the old country, and in 1867 with his family took passage on a sailing vessel at Hamburg, and landed in New York after a voyage of six weeks. They came direct from New York to Ashland, Schuylkill Co., Penn., where they settled, and there our subject and his father worked in the Big Mine Run mines for about three years. Our subject then learned the carpenter's trade, and followed it until moving to his present residence, with the exception of about two years, when he again worked in the mines. His father died in 1869 in Ashland, but his mother is still living and resides in Cook County, Ill. They were the parents of nine children, six of whom are still living: Charles; Rechor, wife of Joe BLANCH; John; Caroline, wife of Charles BLANCHE; Mona and Sophia. In 1880 our subject bought the farm where he now lives, consisting of 108 acres. April 8, 1869, he married Minnie HANS, and the following children were born to them: Frederick, John (deceased), Charles, Hannah (deceased), William, Christian, August, Martyn and Emma. Mr. and Mrs. HENRICKS are members of the Lutheran Church, and he is also a member of the Grange. (History of Columbia and Montour Counties Pennsylvania, Battle, 1887, pg. 494-5)"

A second update from 16 January 2003 reads: "Am especially interested in Sophia (DRIFS) HENRICHS, wife of Joseph HENRICHS. They came to America from Prussia in the 1860's, settled in Pennsylvania. He died after being here only a couple of years and she relocated with the younger children to Cook County, IL. I believe that she was still living in Cook County as late as 1887. I found a biography on her son, my 3ggrandfather that was published in 1887 stating that "she now lives in Cook County, IL" This has been my brick wall for several years. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Lynne"

A third update from 17 January 2003 reads: Joseph and Sophia HENRICHS emigrated from Prussia to PA in 1867. They brought the following children with them:
Charles (b. 1847)
Rechor (b. ~1850) md. Joe BLANCH
John (b.~1856)
Caroline (b.~1859) md. Charles BLANCH
Mona (b. ~1860)
Wilamina (b.~1862)
Sophia (b.~1865)

Joseph died in 1869. After his death, Sophie and most of the children moved to Cook County, IL.. Charles, my 2great-grandfather, stayed in PA with his new bride, Minnie HANS. I think all the others moved with Sophie. I would imagine that the Joseph and Sophie HINRICHS found in Germans to America, 1850-1874 would be a good lead. That last name has been butchered all of my life. I have found my grandfather and his father under some strange spellings in census records that I know are my family. I have lots of information on Charles and his family, but nothing more than what I have shared for his parents and siblings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Lynne (Henrichs) Chick"

A fourth update reads: "...Sophia is still a mystery to me after she moved to Cook County. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.Lynne Chick"

*****
After Lynne will be me, with this update to just one of my brickwalls retitled: "Brickwall--JAAKS, HERMANN, LOMAN, GOETTCHER, CONRAD, WINDT, GILLOFFO", in which I seek specific information on my line of the JAAKS/JAACKS clan out of West Prussia and Cook Co. IL. Believe it or not this is a reduced list--I cut out any names that I had not listed in the details. My maternal grandmother, Evelyn M. V. (birth surname unknown) was born a woods-colt to Martha JAAKS & an unknown father. Evelyn was adopted at birth by her Aunt Bertha and Bertha's husband, Matthew HERMANN Jr. and all of the early records I can find reflect her maiden name as HERMANN.
Note: Martha was one of as many as 6 daughters of Hermann H. JAAKS & two of his 3 wives, Magdalena LOMAN & Annie (lnu). The girls were b. from 1878-1890, in Jefferson Twp., Cook Co. IL, which became part of Chicago about 1895 or in Chicago. Their names were Bertha HERMANN, Rosa/Rose/Rosie WIBORG, Martha HENDRICKSON, Ida NORDIN, Annie JAAKS, & Hattie JAAKS. Annie, in turn, may have had a fraternal twin, a boy, name unknown, who died in early childhood.

Some data I have on person's mentioned follows.
JAAKS/JAACKS:
1) Hermann H. JAAKS b. 4 Aug 1856 West Prussia, emigrated ca. 1875, d. by his own hand 9 Aug 1916. Parents were Hans JAAKS & Dorothea GOETTCHER. Hermann worked as a farmer & saloon-keep.

2) Magdalena ("Lena") LOMAN b. ca. 1856 West Prussia, emigrated ca. 1875, d. between 1882 & 1888 Chicago. Parents were (fnu) LOMAN and Mary (lnu). She had at least 2 sisters, Katherine LOMAN and Dora GAHDE.

HENDRICKSONs:
1) Martha JAAKS HENDRICKSON--b. 1883-1887 Cook Co., d. ?? prob. Chicago, m. (fnu) Hendrickson ?? prob Chicago some time after 1916, worked as nanny and maid.

HERMANNs/HERMANs:
1) Bertha JAAKS- b. 22/Apr/1879 Chicago d. 15 Aug 1921, Chicago, m. Matthew HERMANN Jr. ??? prob Chicago. They had a son, Matthew 3rd. ("Sonny") b. 1910 . Bertha was a tailor.

2) Matthew HERMANN Jr-- b. ca. 1881 prob. Chicago, d. 11 Nov 1935 Chicago. M2) Vivian/Vivien (lnu) who m. Sonny after his death. Matthew Jr. was a milkman and saloon-keep. Son of Matthew HERMANN Sr. and unknown mother.

3) Evelyn HERMANN b. 21 Apr 1907 Chicago, d. 30 Oct 1990 Chicago. M1) at the age of 16 on 7 Aug 1923 to George Lee CONRAD, by whom she had 5 daughters, June, Shirley, Betty Jane, Georgia ("Babe") & Lucille (b. 1923 thru 1930). She brought suit of divorce in March 1932, said divorce being decreed by Nov 1934. By Nov 1936, she was m2) to Joseph John GILLOFFO Jr.. Evelyn held several jobs but worked longest at the Wilson's Sporting Goods factory.

4) Sonny HERMANN b. ca. 1910 Chicago, d. ??? of carbon monoxide poisoning, m. his widowed step-mother Vivian/Vivien (maiden name unknown) HERMANN ??? Chicago. M2) name unknown. He worked as an auto-mechanic.

Others:
1) George Lee Conrad, b. prob. 24 Dec 1901 in Woodstock, McHenry Co., IL, d. prob Dec 1966, m1) Evelyn M. V. HERMANN, m2) unknown. Second son of Fred CONRAD and prob. Minnie WINDT. George worked as an iceman, chauffeur, hack (taxi driver), and local politician. According to the divorce proceedings he also ran a "beer flat" in the 1930s.

2) Joseph John GILLOFFO Jr. b. 29 Jul 1897, LA, d. Aug 1979, m1) Julia (lnu), m2) Mrs. Evelyn M. V. CONRAD. Joe owned a candy store, worked as a tailor & as a drummer in a band. Oldest son of Joseph GILLOFFO Sr. and Rosa PONZO.

So,what are some of the things I don't know but would like to know? (I would be happy if even one of these questions could be answered.)
1) immigration records or specific origin w/in Prussia, for Hermann H. JAAKS, Hans JAAKS, Dorothea GOETTCHER Magdalena LOMAN, Mary LOMAN, Katherine LOMAN, John GAHDE, and Dora LOMAN;
2) the first name of Magdalena, Dora and Katherine LOMAN's father;
3) Mary LOMAN's maiden name;
4) who Evelyn M. Viola HERMANN's real father (my g-granddad) was;
5) what Mr. HENDRICKSON's given name was;
6) specific POB/DOB &POD/DOD for Minnie WINDT, probably my g-grandma (b. ca. 1886 in WI) & who her parents were;
7) specific POB/DOB & POD/DOD for George;
8) specific POB/DOB & POD/DOD for Magdalena;
8) Vivian's maiden name;
9) name of Sonny's 2nd wife as well as his POB/DOB &POD/DOD;
10) name of George's 2nd wife;
11) Annie JAAKS' (Hermann's 2nd wife) maiden name; &
12) Annie and/or Hattie JAAKS' married name;
13) Did Annie have a twin brother, if so what was his name.

After me comes Southern girl (aka Cecile) with: "Brick Wall with ROSE and JOHNSON" posted on 29 Oct 2002, which reads:
"I have hit a brick wall with my ggrandmother Amanda Jane ROSE and her mother Marguerite JOHNSON. I have Amanda's death certificate and all it tells me is that she was born in Illinois in 1867. I don't know who her father was. Amanda's mother remarried in 1875 in Milam Texas, Sabine County. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Cecile"

An update on 30 Oct 2002 reads: "Amanda's maiden name was ROSE Marguerite's maiden name was JOHNSON. As far as I know Marguerite was married to a ROSE. Marguerite married Oliver WOOD the second time. Amanda is the only child with the ROSE name as far as I know. On Oliver WOOD head stone it has the husband of Mrs. M. J. ROSE and on Marguerite's headstone it has Marguerite J. JOHNSON wife of Oliver WOOD. Oliver and Marguerite had two children, Lafayette WOOD and Ollie WOOD. I have records stating that Ollie was born in Pineland, Texas in Sabine county. I also have land records that Oliver WOOD had land in Rapides, parish, Louisiana in 1886. In 1900 Oliver and Marguerite were in Calcasieu parish , Louisiana because Oliver filed for his pension from the Civil War there because I have the papers. Marguerite was born March 4, 1840 and died July 19,1918 . I don't have any idea who Marguerite's parents were or where she was born. Amanda was born October 6, 1857 and died November 20, 1948 in Oberlin Louisiana in Allen parish. Amanda married James I. GARLAND December 19, 1887 in Rapides parish Louisiana. Thanks for the help. Cecile"

A response from jcwilly, sent 1 Dec 2002, reads: "Kind of interesting. I have an Amanda Melvina Rose in my data base. She is the daughter of Hezekiah Sanford Rose, b 22 Aug 1828 in NY, d Jun 1913, and Dorothy Funk Timmons, b 19 Mar 1835 nr Lafayette, IN, d 31 Mar 1923 Rome, Illinois. Amanda was b 21 Jul 1851 & d Nov 1934 (don't know where either event took place), and she md Henry Gill Mar 1866. I wonder if there is any connection."

Another update from 21 Feb 2003 reads: "....I finally recieved Marguerite's death certificate and it states that she was born in Mississippi and her father was Jim ( James) JOHNSON from Mississippi. I found Marguerite in the 1880 census in Hamilton, Texas with her second husband and I also found out there is another daughter. It just has the other daughter's initials that is T. M. I still have not found out who Amanda ROSE's father was. the 1880 census also states that Amanda was born in Illinois. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Southern girl"

Cecile, do you need to update this posting?

Cheers, Wayne

Lynne;

I know that your data reflects a death date of 1869 (there's something hinky going on here) for Joseph but I found a Joseph & Sophia Henricks in Niles Twp, Cook Co. in 1910, (ages are about right, # of children born matches) & I think I found Sophia again in 1920 w/ a 35 year old daughter. Niles seems to be home-base for a whole bunch of Henricks/Henrichs/Hinrichs (many named Sophia or Sophie) who are desended from folks from west prussia (mecklinburg-Schwerin &Hamburg) & I strongly suspect that they're your family. As for the remaining data--I cast a very wide net and pulled in a lot of stuff & didn' even keep everything I found. How much is relevant to your search, I can't say. Hope you get some good out of all of this. Cheers, Wayne
