Hi Folks;

Well it looks as though my brickwall is unscalable--at least at this point in time. So its time to move on to the next one which is "Brickwall with ROSE and JOHNSON", posted by Cecile on 29 October 2002. Cecile's posting reads: "I have hit a brick wall with my ggrandmother Amanda Jane ROSE and her mother Marguerite JOHNSON. I have Amanda's death certificate and all it tells me is that she was born in Illinois in 1867. I don't know who her father was. Amanda's mother remarried in 1875 in Milam Texas, Sabine County. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Cecile"

An update on 30 Oct 2002 reads: "Amanda's maiden name was ROSE Marguerite's maiden name was JOHNSON. As far as I know Marguerite was married to a ROSE. Marguerite married Oliver WOOD the second time. Amanda is the only child with the ROSE name as far as I know. On Oliver WOOD head stone it has the husband of Mrs. M. J. ROSE and on Marguerite's headstone it has Marguerite J. JOHNSON wife of Oliver WOOD. Oliver and Marguerite had two children, Lafayette WOOD and Ollie WOOD. I have records stating that Ollie was born in Pineland, Texas in Sabine county. I also have land records that Oliver WOOD had land in Rapides, parish, Louisiana in 1886. In 1900 Oliver and Marguerite were in Calcasieu parish , Louisiana because Oliver filed for his pension from the Civil War there because I have the papers. Marguerite was born March 4, 1840 and died July 19,1918 . I don't have any idea who Marguerite's parents were or where she was born. Amanda was born October 6, 1857 and died November 20, 1948 in Oberlin Louisiana in Allen parish. Amanda married James I. GARLAND December 19, 1887 in Rapides parish Louisiana. Thanks for the help. Cecile"

A response from jcwilly, sent 1 Dec 2002, reads: "Kind of interesting. I have an Amanda Melvina Rose in my data base. She is the daughter of Hezekiah Sanford Rose, b 22 Aug 1828 in NY, d Jun 1913, and Dorothy Funk Timmons, b 19 Mar 1835 nr Lafayette, IN, d 31 Mar 1923 Rome, Illinois. Amanda was b 21 Jul 1851 & d Nov 1934 (don't know where either event took place), and she md Henry Gill Mar 1866. I wonder if there is any connection."

Another update from 21 Feb 2003 reads: "....I finally recieved Marguerite's death certificate and it states that she was born in Mississippi and her father was Jim ( James) JOHNSON from Mississippi. I found Marguerite in the 1880 census in Hamilton, Texas with her second husband and I also found out there is another daughter. It just has the other daughter's initials that is T. M. I still have not found out who Amanda ROSE's father was. the 1880 census also states that Amanda was born in Illinois. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Southern girl"

A third update was made just l;ast night and reads: "I see one mistake I have made and that is Amanda was born in 1867 not 1857. I found Amanda Jane Rose Garland in the 1930 census and it says that she was born in Illinois, her mother Marguerite Johnson Rose Wood was born in Mississippi and Amanda's father ? Rose was born in New York. Thanks for any help Cecile"

Cecile, do you need to update this posting? I did some preliminary searches and there are a lot of Amanda Rose's out there.

After Cecile comes Mrlucky (aka: Bob) who first posted on 31 Oct 2002 with: "SMITH/CHENEY family HELP PLEASE ". On 6 Feb 2003 he updated this brickwall to read: "....My gg-grandmother was born, according to her son's birth certificate, in "Painshill, Maryland". I cannot seem to find this on any map. She married a man, Theodore W. SMITH, from Chambersburg, Franklin, PA., so maybe it was close to there. Her son, my g-grandfather, Theodore William SMITH, Jr., was born in Franklin Grove, Lee, Illinois. He married in Sangamon county, Illinois in 1891. His wife, Ophelia (CHENEY) and he had two sons, Clifford and Lowell(my bio-grandfather). Ophelia died and he married her sister Phoebe (CHENEY). They had no children that I know of. In 1920 census, Theodore W. SMITH Jr. was living in Boody,Macon, Illinois with wife Anna and 13 year old son Cecil. I have been unable to find out anything about Clifford SMITH (born c. 1892) or Cecil SMITH, (born c. 1907). Theodore W. SMITH Jr. died in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois on May 29, 1939. He was born in Lee county,IL Nov.19,1861. Any help with Painshill, Cecil or Clifford would be greatly appreciated. I am "stumped". Bob O."

Bob, do you want to update? Based on my research it appears your g-g-grandma was named Martha. You wouldn't happen to know what her maiden name was would you?

After Bob should be Mac1 (aka Beverly) with "Elmira BROWN and Joseph THOMAS", posted on 10/31/2002. But we razed that one back in March. So we'll move onto Gail with "WIGGINTON, SIMMONS, ADAMS, WILSON, GODDARD", posted on 31 Oct 2002. Gails posting reals: "Looking for any clue at all as to Charles Wigginton's parents -- Charles b. 25 Jan 1836 and d. 10 May 1904. Buried in Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery with his wife Melissa Simmons b. 12 Jun 1841 and d. 24 Feb 1906.
Another dead end is Jeremiah Adams b 4 Feb 1847 and d. 25 Feb 1910 - marr. Margaret Wilson 25 Mar 1879. All lived and died around Sparta, Randolph, IL. Would sure appreciate any help at all on these folks! Thanks, Earllyn e-mail: [email protected]"

An update on 6 Dec 2002 reads: "Still looking for my G-mother's side - all in Illinois. Hoping there is a cousin out there somewhere who will recognize these names.

I have tried many times to reach someone at the church with no luck -- if someone knows how to reach the pastor I would so appreciate an e-mail with the info. Have looked for so many years -- about to give up... Thanks, Earllyn e-mail: [email protected] "

Gail would you care to update?

Cheers, Wayne

Cecile;

I checked the 1880 Census to get a better idea of what was recorded. It at least provides more metadata than FamilySearch did. I find it interesting that both girls wwere listed with the surname Wood vice Rose and that Amanda was listed as M. I. Wood vice W. I. as recorded by FamilySearch--was Amanda a junior?

I've been diligently searching the 1870 census with no joy so far. Cheers, Wayne

Cecile;

The prospectus doesn't looks good. The names James and Margaret Johnson are just too common and Rose isn't much better. I've looked for your family names in the 1850/1860/1870 censuses in MS/IL/TX/LA, trying to pin down any one of these folks--no luck so far. I think we're gonna need some countiy names or placenames to have a prayer of finding any of the Johnsons or Roses.

I'll keep trying but no promises.

Cheers, Wayne

Wayne,
     Sorry I was out of town. I have looked at the 1880 census in Hamilton county Texas and it is M.J. which could be Mandy Jane.

Wayne,
    Thanks for any help that you can offer. It has been a real problem finding these people. In 1870 Oliver Wood was still in Rutherfordton County, North Carolina with his parents.
                                   Thanks again,
                                    Cecile
