Hey IKKers;

In doing the brickwalls I keep running into for-fee sites that claim to have info on the names I'm searching, just as with Kinfolk Konnection when I was searching for Darla's brickwall. Since I'm not wealthy nor, I suspect, are most of you, I was wondering whether it would be ethical for us as a group to agree that each member involved in this effort would subscribe to one of the services offered. Right now I've got a 1-month sub to Genealogy.com's 1900 census and a 1-year subscription to Ancestry.com (minus the UK and periodical subsets).

If this is something that we could legally and ethically do, we could probably make short work of all of our brickwalls and then some.

Lemme know what you think.

Cheers, Masugu

Janie;

I think a resource list open to all is the best policy. Folks who don't
want to post don't have to--no hard feelings. I intend to write up the
strengths and shortcomings of my subscriptions and that kind of thing
could be very helpful to others in determining what they want to ask or
whether they want to subscribe to a particular service. -- Masugu

Just my two cents, but since this site is a group genealogy effort, I think that what ever site that members subscribe to and are will to do lookups on, should be listed like the Lookups board or possibly made a section of the Lookups board.  We all contribute what we can. Some with books or subscriptions and others with good internet search engines that find what we might have missed, or just ideas and suggestions along with friendship.  Is that fresh baked pumpkin pie I smell  ? Hi, Paula!  Thanks for posting your resources.  They will eventually get lost here on a message board, so how about posting them on the Lookups List where they can easily be found by members requesting lookups?  They'll stay safe and sound there!

Janie;

I'm still willing to work on the subscriptions list as I mentioned earlier and I've saved most if not all of the detailed responses we've gotten to date. If you'll let me know where to post all the digested data I'll get started.

New Subject: I've been trying to respond to at least some of the brickwall messages that are coming in with the new members. But its dificult going because there's often not enough seed info to make a decent start. Do you thnk it would help if we posted a brickwall form with fields for that data we think is most essential? That way we might get more consistent starting data and we'd almost certainly have more consistent responses. Just a thought. --Masugu

That is a good Idea some people including myself leave out vital information when asking for help.

I have the Subscriptions Board set up for those who subscribe to paid genealogy sites that are willing to use their resources to benefit our members.  Please list the premium sites you subscribe to and Masugu will take over from there.
I also have the new Brick Walls List up for use by members looking for assistance through the Brainstorming project.  Please fill in the fields appropriately so that the brainstorming team will have something to go on.  You may leave blank fields if you do not have the information (such as dates), but please keep in mind that the team cannot promise results.  They will, however, do their best to assist members with their brick walls by doing lookups for them.  Let's give them all a great big THANK YOU for all their help!

Hi everyone,

I just read through the suggestions (quite a few), including Wayne's and I'd like to say that if anyone needs a look - up, I have an ancestry.com sub. for census records and would be happy to share...

I run into brick walls all of the time.  I have a subscription to Genealogy.com's census and have found a lot of stuff, but not necessarily the stuff that is important.  I am hoping that one of my brick walls can be overcome with help from all of you.  Do any of you have Pardun, Reeves,  or Ferris in your background?  Right now I am looking for the birthplace of Alice Ferris, born 1856 in Illinois.  Her parents are Joseph L. Ferris and Mary Ellen Garvin.  I thought that her place of birth would help me find more about the marriage of Joseph and Mary Ellen.  (They are my great grandparents.) If any of you can help, I would be so happy!!
Thanks in advance,
Judy Ferris Jepsen
