This week the Brainstorming team will try to help Neyeh with her brick wall.  As stated in the message sent to all members and posted on the General board, Neyeh has 3 days to respond to anything posted for her.  If we do not hear anything from her by Thursday, the next in line will be posted.  Neyeh posted this message on 7/2/02:

Okay this one is alot tougher, my grandmother was born June 23, 1921 in Glen Lake, Minn, but was later adopted in Aug 1925.  I have been searching for her birth parents.  The names we have available for her parents are: William Henry Jackson born ?? in Chaugne, NY and Blanche Gertrude Shirley, born May 1901 in Rusk County, Wis,  the next date I Have after this is Blanche in the 1920 census putting her living in Sparta, Wis, then the next date after that, they married Sep 1920, but I do not have a marriage cert, so who knows about the date, or if they were even actually married.  This one is driving me nuts, there is no such place as Chaugne, NY, and there are two diff dates listed as Williams bday, one is 1896 and the other is 188-something.  so who knows with this one, William Jackson (oy vey too common!!!) and beleive it or not, so is both Blanche Shirley AND Blanche Jackson

Nyeh;

This is a tough one--just about as convoluted as some of my family history.

I searched the WI 1910 index for Blanche and came up blank. However, when I did a search on the surname Shirley in Rusk and Monroe Co.s I came up with an Oscar Shirley in Rusk Co. In 1910, Oscar was m. to his 2nd wife Ella. They had 3 children, his 2 daughters from his first marriage and her daughter by her first marriage. His step-daughter, Genevieve, was the right age but that brings up two new problems: her name and the fact that if this is she then her maiden name really wasn't Shirley. Anyway, on the off-chance that this was indeed the family you were looking for, I checked the 1900 Census and found Oscar in Nebraska with his first wife, Elizabeth, and their oldest daughter, Elsie. In 1930, I found only one Blanche Jackson in MN. She was working at a hospital and her marital status was listed as "R" (I don't know what this means in this context but if it were in the Relationship column it would stand for Roomer).

Good Luck, Masugu

In the 1930, Sparta, Monroe County, Wisconsin census there were the following children listed at the

MARGUERITE SHIRLEY 5 BORN IN IOWA
WALTER E SHIRLEY 5 BORN IN IOWA
DANIEL SHIRLEY 11 BORN IN IOWA
WILLIAM SHIRLEY 3 BORN IN WISCONSIN

THEY WERE ALL RESIDENTS OF THE STATE PUBLIC SCHOOL FOR DEPENDANT CHILDREN.

DANIEL'S PARENT'S PLACES OF BIRTH WERE LISTED AS UNKNOWN
FOR WALTER, HIS FATHER'S PLACE OF BIRTH WAS UNKNOWN, BUT HIS MOTHER'S WAS LISTED AS IOWA

FOR MARGUERITE, ALL THREE WERE LISTED AS BORN IN IOWA.

FOR WILLIAM, HIS PARENTS WERE LISTED AS  BORN IN IOWA.

SINCE YOUR BLANCHE WAS IN SPARTA IN 1920, I AM WONDERING IF SHE COULD BE CONNECTED WITH THESE CHILDREN

I did a country-wide 1930 census search for any Shirleys born in Wisconsin.  Surprisingly, there were only 25 results...these were interesting.

Hennepin County, Minnesota

Shirley, Dalma 42 Single, Wisconsin, Norway, Norway
Shirley, Edwin 41 married at 35 with wife, Betsy. He was born in Wisconsin, both parents in Norway

but also interesting was this entry;

Arlon A. Shirley, 12 in Worth County, Iowa; Northwood Township.  Aarlon was born in Wisconsin and was listed as an adopted son of widowed, 56 year old Nora King.  Both of Arlon's parents were born in Iowa.

and...I did find 20 year old Blanche in 1920. She is a servant at that same school.  Did you happen to look for Mr. Jackson working there as well [Q].  I  noticed that not all the names come up when I do certain searches, for example, only  3 year old William Shirley showed up on the nation-wide 1930 search.  But when I narrowed it down to Monroe County, all children showes as results.

I did find a 69 year old William H Jackson in Sparta 1920.  He was living with his 77 year old sister.  They were both widowed.  I also went through all the Jackson families in 1920 Sparta and did not find another William.

Thought you may be interested in this picture of Glen Lake Sanitorium.  Was Blanche a patient or a worker [Q]

Melody;

Did you find Blanche in 1920 on a direct search? I too did that with no
Blanche's showing up. I also did a search for all Shirleys (5 different
variant spellings) in Rusk and Monroe counties WI and in MN but didn't
get a hit on 1920 (but got the 1930 hit). I've been having problems with
my browser lately and am concerned that I'm not getting everything I
should. Cheers, Wayne

After reading Mel's input I went back to 1920 and did a first name search and found Blanche where Mel said she would be--I don't know why my earlier search didn't turn her up. I also found 69 year-old William H. Jackson (as per Mel's message) and a 52 year-old William F. Jackson & family --both living in Sparta. Details follow. Masugu
