The above Finis appears to be the son of Joel and Louise Jenings. |

In 1930 Jane Jennings, born 1843 Ohio, was shown as the mother-in-law to Lottie McConnell? Frances is the wife of Lottie and they had 6 children. Elsewhere in Crawford Co., is a Finley Jennings, of the right age to be Finis. He said both his parents were born in Ohio, consistant with most of the census records. MCCONNELL, LOTTA JENNINGS, FRANCIS 1893-03-28 1 /202 CRAWFOR JENNINGS, FINLEY DEDRICK, MINNIE 1900-02-04 1 /296 CRAWFORD |

It doesn't appear that your Jennings are connected to the Ohio/Maryland/England Jennings. |

In reviewing previous messages, I only see the Green Co. marriage of William Jennings and Sarah Jones, and no explanation as to why I zeroed in on them. In the 1860 Vermilion/Vermillion Co., IL Elmwood (Ridgefarm) census, there was another Jennings family who appears to be the parents and siblings, or other close relatives to James. They are William 22, born in Tennessee Joseph 17, born in Tennessee and Martha, age 25, who appears to be married to George Whote/White, age 21 WHITE, GEORGE W JENNINGS, MARTHA A 1859-10-13 A /295 VERMILION and this appears to be your family: Name: | William Jennings | Age: | 43 | Estimated Birth Year: | abt 1807 | Birth Place: | Tennessee | Gender: | Male | Home in 1850(City,County,State): | Division 9, Greene, Tennessee | Household Members: | Please Excuse if I have alread covered this | | |

All of this is really useful, Melody and also fascinating. I have never seen the 1870 abstract of census for David, even though the family records kept by Toles are good. Due to the presence of matriarch Elizabeth Inman Toles in WI, they did know the Toles lived there for a time. This would have been just 4 yrs. after Elizabeth lost her husband. It is a valuable record & I can't thank you enough for it and for all of the Crawford information. David's brother, John White Toles was probably named after George White who lived in Crawford when the Toles did. (David Debra Toles was surely named after a man w. the surname Debra who lived in Miami, Clark, OH when they did.) Geo. White is a party the Jennings & the Toles both knew well then. Both John Toles in 1837, 1844 and James Jennings 1853 & 1858, acquired public domain land in Crawford. Lot B. Toles was taking land in Jasper; he is 2nd generation not the patriarch. The Toles also lived in Jasper & registered in the 1860 F. Cen. in Grandville. I have seen the r.p. owner, John Toles before in OH but to date, I am not sure of his relation to the family, just that he is a relative. The first known Toles were Daniel, Lot, William & Joseph their father in Edgefield & Newberry, SC. Daniel stayed behind when the others went north & Jos. died. Mary Ann Toles m. James Heaton, 6 January 1853 in Robinson but bro. in-law David Heaton lived in Richland Co., WI and may have been the draw that took the Toles to WI after the death. The Heatons & the Toles had farmed in Ohio before coming to Illinois. In the Jennings of Vermilion, we now have the marriages of James A. to Margaret Kelley/Killey 3 February, 1853; Elizabeth that you just located w. Alex Collum; and Martha A. to Geo. White. I don't know whether John Jennings is connected to James or Wm. Jennings but I will be looking into that & whether they knew the Toles. With so much information, I need to add a FGS for the elder (Wm.) Jennings. I have a long one for James A. Jennings and for Lot Toles. I feel that the data you found is valuable for anyone researching early Crawford and Vermilion Counties in Illinois. What a treasure! I can't thank you enough, Melody but I'll try. Thank you very BIG! |

You are very welcome....just "pass it forward," of which I am merely doing in appreciation of help that I have gotten in the past. Helping others with their folks is very satisfying, not for the thanks, but for identity it gives them and their ancestors. |
