Greetings!!
I am searching for Stephen McCarry. He is my 2nd great grandfather.
My great grandfather (Marion) was born on 11 March 1885 in Pearl, Pike, Illinois. According to his birth register, Stephen McCarry and his mother's name was Lucinda... the last name looks like Martin or Manteir. Birth place of Stephen was Arkansas (according to Marion's birth record).
I also have the birth register for Marion's sister. First name was left blank but supposedly Mabel was her name. Birth date for Mabel was 27 Feb 1883 in Montezuma, Pike County. Birth place for Stephen on this is IL. The mother's name was Dema (Martin) McCarry. Stephen's age at the time of Mabel's birth was 27 years of age. Dema's age was 17.
The following is the family story:
A few months after Marion was born, the mother died. Stephen, his mother-in-law, and the daughter (she would have been about 2 years old) left Pearl, Pike County, IL and headed for St. Louis, never to heard of again.
Marion was raised by a wonderful couple with the last name of Horner. Isaac Horner and Sarah Gonterman Horner. He is not in the 1900 census with them so not sure where he is then.
According to some censuses, Marion says his father (Stephen) was born in the United States (real helpful there)... Another census says France... Another says it is unknown...
The mother of Marion was Lucinda and Mabel was Dema (maybe Lodema?)... possibly Martin or Mantier... I am leaning toward Martin... The Manteir looks a lot like Martin when you look at the other words in the register and compare the handwriting.
I found a Lodemia Martin living in Montezuma, Pike County in 1880 census, age was 14. That would definitely work for Mabel's birth. Her mother's name was Lea, born in Ohio . No father mentioned but was born in Ohio.
In this 1880 census, there is:
Lea Martin, age 35, head of house, b. OH, pa: b. OH
John Orndoff, 17, son, pa: OH
Lodemia Martin, 14, dau, IL, pa: b. OHOH
Eleanor Martin, 9, dau, IL, pa: b. OH
Samuel Morris, 22, boarder, KY, pa: b KY
I have searched Pike County from top to bottom for information and there is none to be found. I have written to the church were the Horners were members, hoping there was some record of Marion... nothing...
Anybody that has any ideas, help, information would be greatly... Family knowledge is tough as my grandfather (Marion's son) was killed at the age of 29 and my dad was only 7... so there wasn't any family memories passed down. I have spoken with my dad's cousins and they also didn't have much information... I think that stems from Grandpa Marion not knowing much...
Thanks in advance for any help!
