Christian F. CARSTEDT, b. 1867 enroute from Germany.  Family settled in or near Mendota, Illinois.  Christian, Sr. was killed in a rail road accident.  Wife's name was Mary.  Mary Carstedt remarried, but  I never learned her new name.  I do know she had at least one more child by that marriage, whose name was Anna.

Christian F. CARSTEDT, b. 1867, was married twice.  The second marriage was to my grandmother, whose name was Anna Alice RUSH, from WOODFORD County.

I am interested in knowing more about the Carstedt family.  The name could also be spelled with a K.  As I understand it, a family feud did bring about a spelling change for brothers.

1900 Calhoun County, Iowa shows a Mr. Carsteadt born in Germany.  He is indexed as Chas, but I believe it is Chris.

Chris W.Carsteadt is showm born March 1863 in Germany with both parents born in Germany.  With him is his wife, Anna, born  January 1887 in Iowa.  She had not given birth at this time.  It looks like they had been married 4 years, and possibly both had been married twice.

Also with them is a son, Ralph M. born July 1889 in Illinois, with his father born in Germany and his mother in Illinois.  Ralph was attending school.

Both Chris and Anna could read and write and speak English.  Chris was a Hotel Manager.

Am I correct in reading this Head of Household as Chris Carsteadt?

Ralph Melville Carstedt registered for the draft (WWI) June 5, 1917 in Hardin County, Iowa.
He gave his birthdate as July 5, 1889; a natural born citizen born in Mendota, Illinois.  He was a farmhand working for Rollie Henderson.  At the time he was married with two children.

I especially like the fact that description of the person registering for the Draft is given.
Ralph was shown as having Medium build and was of Medium height.  His eyes were blue and he had light brown hair.  He was not bald.

In 1910, Ralph is living in Grundy County, Iowa,  apparently working for Edwin Wiley.

Ralph is living with a Pearl in 1920 Marshall Co., Iowa.  Pearl was shown one year younger than Ralph, born in Pennsylvania.  The three children appear to be both Ralph's and Pearl's.

Rhea, son born abouf 1913
Margaret born aboug 1915
Keith bron about 1919

Evidently there was a Charles W. Carstead, and he is probably the same as the one I thought was Chris, father of Ralph.

Here are the marriages for both Christian and Charles.

CARSTEDT, CHARLES W                  KLINEFELTER, MAGGIE A                09/13/1888 2  /236  4081     LA SALLE

CARSTEDT, CHRISTIAN                  KNEISER, FREDERICKE                  02/03/1891 3  /87   5873     LA SALLE

Both marriages are after 1877 so you should be able to get addition information by ordering the records.

Wow...I hadn't been here for a while.  Thanks for all the hard work.  In message 11, this is my grandpa with his first family.  Albert was killed in WWI.  He is buried at Arlington.  Now if I could just find out where Grandpa's father died.  I know Christian F. Carstedt was also grandpa's father's name.  Grampa said he was very young when  his dad got killed in an accident....possibly working for a Rail Road.

Thanks again.
Sharon
