Sarah WORKMAN had an estate that went into tax arrears in 1873, Johnson Twp, Clark, IL.  This woman does not appear in the F. Cen. of 1860 or 1870 per the county clerk in Clark.  She may have registered in a state census.  I am trying to find out who she is and to whom related.  It may be more than a coincidence that my great grandfather, John L. WORKMAN came into the county and married Margaret E. Fitzgerald 25 September, 1873.  He may have been there to salvage the estate.  He was an IL native, b. November of 1852 but I have never found him or his parents.  There was a John Workman in Vienna, Johnson, IL of the right age but I traced him and he married and had children--no connection.  I have also traced the John Workmans born in Indiana at that time.  Sarah is an important clue, I feel.

Having spent a number of hours on John L. Workman, I can see why you have listed him on the Brick Walls Board.

I could only come up with a possible guy in 1880 Bates Co., MO (seemed to have a different wife).

I did conclude some things.
The folks, including those connected to Workmans, who had touched base in Clark Co., often connected to those in Coles Co.  They also connected to Indiana.

There were other Workmans in Clark Co. at various times:

WORKMAN, JOHN L                      FITZGERALD, MARGARET E               1873-09-25 F  /53            CLARK
WORKMAN, WILLIAM                     BOUSEMAN, NANCY E                    1855-09-03 2  /292           CLARK
LINKEY, RICHARD                      WORKMAN, ADALINE                     1869-05-23 E  /422           CLARK
COMSTOCK, GEORGE                     WORKMAN, ANN                         1858-03-02 3  /157           CLARK
DEVERICO, THOMAS J                   WORKMAN, MARY E                      1895-04-20 H  /285  2        CLARK
...................................................................................................................................................................
The Mary Workman (above) who married Thomas Deverick (seems to be of the Coles Co.  Devericks), was actually a Wortman.   You might play around with that name.

WORTMAN, THEADORE                    PERRINE, MARTHA E                    1872-12-22 F  /8             CLARK
BUSH, NOAH                           WORTMAN, ELIZABETH                   1862-01-02 E  /80            CLARK
JONES, DAVID                         WORTMAN, MARTHA E                    1884-03-29 G  /181  2        CLARK
BURRIS, MARTIN                       WORTMAN, MARY E                      1864-03-06 E  /157           CLARK

The fact that John used his middle initial may indicate that he was called by his middle name as a child, or in casual circumstances; a common practice.
...............................................................................................................................................................
Richard Linky may have been the one in 1870 St Clair County, without a wife.
................................................................................................................................................................
Margaret Fitzgerald Workman may have been the one (probably is) born 1853, daughter of  John, living in Dolson, Clark Co. 1870.
.....................................................................................................................................................................
Searched 1870 Clark Co., (Dolson) for John NLN born 1852, give or take 5 years.  No leads on that.

Melody, you went far afield but the man did live in Bates Co., MO much later, in 1909 alone on Rich Hill.  He appears in the 1900 F. Cen. there but in 1880, he was in Montevallo, Vernon, MO with his second wife, Nancy Eliz. Price, known as Lizzie.  So that IS the same John L. Workman.  It is his roots in IL that have me at a loss and I hugely value your tip about the Coles Co.-Clark Co. connection.  I had known nothing about that.  More than useful!  I knew about those male Workman marriages but not the marriages of Adaline, Ann and Mary E.  Maybe Adaline was the daughter of Sarah Workman.  She & Richard must have left the county after the mg. & perhaps, as you say, went to St. Clair.  The John Fitzgerald you found in Dolson is definitely the in-law.  Up until the marriage, birth & death, I have Margaret E. and quite a pedigree on her family but I've no idea what took her life or where they lived after they wed and had Rebecca on 19 September, 1874.  There was also Andrew Workman, who m. Abigail Taylor in Clark 23 July, 1840 and Noah Workman who m. Elizabeth Watson 18 June, 1840.  Hiram Taylor & other Taylors lived in Clark and I have wondered if John belonged to Andrew or lived with the Taylors because he left for Vernon Co., MO when Hiram Taylor did.  Hiram was the justice of the peace in Marshall, Clark.  It puzzles me that Sarah Workman only shows up dead & owing money--what a way to be remembered, demonstrating once again that official records do lack sentiment.  Thank you, Melody!  Not only for your search but for your helpful tip--I love that.  By the way, there was a widow Martha Workman in Clark in 1880 with a daughter Mary, five.  She may be the same girl who married Ts. Deverico in 1895.  She would be twenty.  You could say I vacuum Workman data indiscriminately owing to my obsession to find my great grandfather.

I also found a Workman family in Sangamon family .  My GGGrandfather John T Rutherford was a worker on his farm.

You are correct about finding John in Vernon Co., MO in 1880.   I put down the county because I had found him in Bates Co. in 1900.  I then had gone to Missouri deaths for a Rich Hill Workman death.  Rather than John L, though I found the fattached (may be worth checking out)

Notice where he lived in Bates, his informant, and place of burial...all leads.

What an interesting web of people you have uncovered, Melody.  I will be busy for weeks.  I also found a John Workman of the right age in an 1860 F. Cen., Southern Division, Shelby County, IL.  He was estimated to be seven years of age & since John was born November, 1852, that is PERFECT.  I found this just today.  Unfortunately, I was not allowed to view the census image which is owned by Footprints.  Therefore, I don't know who his parents or guardians might be in this record.  I am SO interested in the people you found for John L., as I had pictured him all alone after his wife, Nancy Eliz. Price divorced him in 1885.  She tried to portray his life as a miserable waste, saying he "died in the gutter" (not true).  I'm glad he had relatives in Bates & it is wonderful that you found these families!  I feel that I may be closing in on Sarah.  I also found a Sarah, David & James from IL living in a mining area of Boulder, CO today but I did not locate John there.  Or anywhere else in 1870.  Heaps & heaps of thanks!

You found Edith Workman in Nevada, Vernon, MO and his obituary said John L. Workman had "come to Rich Hill, Bates, MO many years ago from Nevada."  Perhaps he spent time with Edith Workman Bolser and V. Allen Bolser there.  I would imagine so.  John L. is my great grandfather and that is why I have pursued this so doggedly.  I have this big bushy family tree with almost nothing on his branch.
