The gravesites I am seeking are of my direct line of Besançon surname. They resided in Cahokia, Centreville and Dupo in St Clair County, Illinois:
1] Joseph Besançon, born 1857/1858 in France; died 01-17-1940 ;
2] Adeline Chatillion Besançon, born 1878 St Louis, St Louis County, Missouri;
----------
Their children:
3] Eugénie “Jennie?Besançon, born 1889, Centreville, St Clair County, Illlinois;
may have married Louis W Rey [unconfirmed]
----------
4] Emile Joseph Besançon, born 07-27-1892, Centreville, St Clair County, Illlinois;
wed Bertha E [née unknown] 1921/1930, probably St Clair County;
died 03-05-1977, Dupo, St Clair County, Illinois;
----------
5] Alfred Besançon, born 1897, Centreville, St Clair County, Illlinois.
----------
There were two other children born to this couple between 1888 and 1900. Both died prior to the 1900 census.
Adeline Chatillion was married to a Christian Bertheling [could be Betelein, Berthelin, etc] and had two daughters by him:
6] Rose, Rosa Bertheling, born 04-03-1886, probably Cahokia, St Clair County, Illinois;
wed Henry Sauget, 02-09-1904 St Clair County, Illinois;
died 11-1968, East St Louis, St Clair County, Illinois.
----------
7] Julia Bertheling, born 1881, probably Cahokia, St Clair County, Illinois;
wed Joseph Julius Sauget, 08-14-1901, St Clair County, Illinois;
died 04-1969, Collinsville, Madison County, Illinois.
The surname is rarely spelled correctly in records. Many of the English-speaking census takers were not familiar with and could not understand or interpret French surnames, so they aren’t even close to a “soundex?variation of the surname. I have some census, marriage and social security records but no idea as to the burial locations. I’m hoping that if any gravemarkers exist, the surname is spelled correctly!
Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
