Your more than welcome Jim. I knew that several people on the TNSMITH line had experience with Gedcoms, so I figured if anyone knew, someone there would.

I am posting the instructions that were sent. I believe these were the ones that worked for Jim, since I received several replies. :)

"I bought a second copy of FTM and
copied the file to a CD.  Then, opening the file I had just copied onto the
CD from the second FTM copy, we could not edit the file.  I wrote to FTM and
they were very helpful.  Here are their instructions:

Files that are burned onto a CD-R/CD-RW disc are saved there in "Read-only"
status. Even if you copy the file back to your hard drive, sometimes the
Read-only status is not automatically removed from the copy of the file.

Here are the steps to copy the file back to your hard drive, and then remove
the Read-only status. If you have already copied the file to your hard
drive, please skip to step 2.

  1.. Begin by copying the file to your hard drive:
    1.. Insert the CD with your data on it.
    2.. Open My Computer and then the CDROM icon.
    3.. Find your file on the CD. Right-click it and select Copy.
    4.. Go to the folder on your computer where you'd like to store the
file. You can put it anywhere. Some users prefer the My Documents folder.
Just remember where you've put it--write down the path if needed.
    5.. Once you're in the destination folder, right-click in a blank spot
and select Paste from the menu.
  2.. Once the file has been copied back to your hard drive, navigate to the
file's location using Windows Explorer or "My Computer".
  3.. Right-click on the file and choose Properties.
  4.. From the General section remove the check from the Read only box.
  5.. Choose OK to save this change."
