Well I moved and have to use dial up. When I got online for first time on dial up earthlink helped set me up but they told me to uninstall the cd then reinstall it. I did but when I tried to reinstall it it says has a newer version. I have been online with them and on phone 5 times in the past 2 days. I am so confused. I can connect with internet explorer but no earthlink. And that is my server. Shouldn't I have a earthlink icon? I used to get it in the task bar but no more. Also I go to start, then programs, and earthlink is not there but it is in the add and remove. Can't remove it or install. Done a virus scan and ok there. I don't know much about this stuff. LOL I know sound like a dumby. Sorry. HELP LOL my hubby says I sound like a ditzy blonde LOL LOL but am a brunette. Thanks gang.
Earthlink is your Internet Service Provider (ISP) that connects you to the internet. You do not connect with Internet Explorer (IE) - that is your browser with which you view pages on the internet after you connect through Earthlink. Clicking on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop may take you to your dialup service but you are not actually connecting with IE. As long as you can connect with your dialup and use the Internet Explorer to surf the 'net, I wouldn't worry about whether or not you see Earthlink in your Add/Remove list or your programs list, though it should be in there. If you can connect it's in there someplace - was your IE installed as part of your Earthlink installation? Why did Earthlink tell you to uninstall and reinstall? Was there a problem with the initial installation? Did you ask tech support about the "newer version" message you got? Is this a newer version of Earthlink Internet Access or IE? If you just subscribed to their service then you should already have the latest version. They should be able to help you out a little more and answer your questions. My advice: you pay for their service so keep them on the line for as long as it takes to get you comfortable with it and get your questions answered. I assume they have a toll-free number, but if not go out and get yourself a pre-paid phone card and keep it just for calls to them. If it's your quarter they'll put you on hold indefinitely and then you have to worry about what your next phone bill will look like. Anyone else have anything to add that might help Carla?
