A man named Olaf Kringhaug has been working on translating a book written by Martin Ulvestad. Mr. Ulvestad collected all the information he could about individual Norwegian immigrants and settlements, and published his findings in 1907. Unfortunately, he wrote in Norwegian, and the printing was the old gothic-hard-to-read print. Mr. Kringhaug has translated many of the portions in the book about early Norwegian settlements, and this page is available free on the internet. The rest of the Ulvestad book (in Norwegian) is available as a web book, and that deals with individuals. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~maggiebakke/illinois.html |

Yes, I find it fascinating to see actual pictures of the ships which transported our ancestors to this country. Also the articles about the voyages are fascinating. There are also some passenger lists and information about how they frequently didn't sail directly to America, but offloaded in England, traveled to another seaport by train, and then sailed on to North America. The old advertising is also fascinating. This site has been around for quite awhile, formerly is was called "100 Years of Emigrant Ships From Norway." Ruth |
