Hi All;

Just got the following tip from a friend. I just registered and can't wait to see what new and interesting stuff they'll have.

Cheers, Wayne

"....the Cook County (IL) [USA] Clerk announced that newly digitized versions of county records such as birth and death
certificates and marriage licenses will be available beginning in January on one searchable Web site.

The vital record documents - without Social Security numbers - will include birth certificates that are at least 75 years old,
marriage certificates more than 50 years old, and death certificates more than 20 years old. There are 24 million
vital records, which date to 1871, when record-keeping began after the Chicago Fire wiped out previous stockpiles.

For more information go to the following site....

Hi Thelma;

Its the Trib site and you have to register (its free).

The whole url is:
www.chicagotribune.com/services/site/registration/access-registered.intercept

Make sure you get the entire url, when the site pops, hit the "Register Now!" button in the lower left of teh page, and your on your way.

My understanding is that the data index will be made available in January 2008. If you find something in the indexes then you'll have to pay for a copy of the actual record. But I suspect that the data will eventually be available through various Trib subscriptions. Also the indexes may be sufficient for look-up services like Mollie Kennedy's--which would probably be way cheaper than any commercial service.

Cheers, Wayne

Hi Wayne,

I registered at the Trib site to read the article.  Guess we'll have to keep our credit cards next to our computers.

Thanks for sharing.  Shish...they coulda followed the lead of Missouri's death certificates.

Say, do you know of any other state that offers free downloads of death certificates?

Hi Mel;

I don't think I've run across any yet but it might be worth a Google or two...perhaps "free death certificates" or something along that line. I'll keep it in mind.

Cheers, Wayne
