Hi Folks;

Got the following of another site. The columnization for the matrix is kinda loopy but the comments may be useful. Cheers, Wayne
This is a matrix of my observations of the various on-line census data
bases I've been using. Use a non-proportional font to read or print. If you
find errors, please correct and repost.

(1) 1890 Fragment of census, most was destroyed.
(2) 1890 "census substitute" derived from directories, etc.

Ancestry.com and Geneology.com available by paid subscription.
Ancestry Plus and Heritage Quest are available through some libraries.
LDS is free.

Ancestry:

Allows searches by first name.
With Stephen Morse web page (http://www.stevemorse.org/) can get a
typewritten listing of a complete census page by entering page information.
Can't restrict search to birth year, birth place, etc.

In light of rhe recent discussion of the various advantages of different databases, my son made this for me and I thought it might be helpful to others.

This is a matrix of my observations of the various on-line census data
bases I've been using. Use a non-proportional font to read or print.

Allows searches by first name.
Allows searches restricted by birth year, birth place, state, county.
After person is found, can display transcription of entire household, next
household, and previous household.
Film references use LDS film indexing system, not NARA indexing.

Heritage Quest

Allows search by name, census year, and state.
Advanced search also allows search by census year, state, county, location,
age range (10 year groups), sex, race, and birthplace.
Can only search a single census year in one search, but with Stephen Morse
web page (http://www.stevemorse.org/), can search multiple years.

Geneology.com

Allows search of entire U.S. or by state.
Can't restrict search to birth year, birth place, etc.
The list of hits for a last name search isn't user friendly.

Its still messed up--my fault this time I think. Must be rain on the brain--we're averaging 4+ inches a week and have had 4 sunny days in the last 2 months. Wayne
