Have you ever considered a Research Tips Board?
Leave no stone unturned; it could be your ancestor.
I went to a garage sale last week and found a cousin. The person who was having a sale and my gr.grandmother both descend from the same Brock tree. My line stopped in Illinois; her's continued to Missouri. Until I met this lady I did not know I had any kin in Missouri, and I didn't know there were any living descendants.
My gr.gr. grandfather owned a private bank in Illinois before banking laws were enacted. I couldn't find him because he and his cousin used the same initials. An Illinois State Archives volunteer found him in a random search of state records. Using the documentation I was able to trace the migration pattern back to North Carolina. Case solved. He was a missing branch in the 17th generation of the HOBART tree.
The amusing part of this story is that we aren't even related. He was my gr. gr. grandmother's fourth husband, and they didn't have kids.
