As promised earlier today, I have created this board strictly for IKK members and managers to post suggestions for making the IKK a better site. Post any ideas you may have for new pages or boards or whatever your creative little minds can come up with! All suggestions will be considered but managers will decide if the ideas are appropriate for the site. PLEASE - DO NOT POST ANYTHING HERE EXCEPT SUGGESTIONS. Any messages posted here that belong on another board will be deleted and the information will be lost. |

Watching our size meter go up and desiring this site to be free for us all (including the managers, I know it is free to the rest of us) I am wondering if we could spend some time weeding out old posts, removing old pictures (that we can replace with new ones later) and cleaning up some repeat areas? I am not sure if this will help us with our size, but think it may help if we each go in and take a look at what we posted and decide whether or not it should be kept. I am wondering if that is why the idea of getting rid of certain pages was hinted at. Also, I won't do anything until our Managers give the go-ahead. If we keep in mind that this is a genealogy site, maybe some of the photos of us and our pets can be replaced with gravemarkers and ancestors. I'll gladly remove my photo album (which I haven't maintained anyway) for someone else to put up something else...or I can start putting up cemetery pictures that I have taken. Maybe if we do continue to post our personal pictures we could do a housecleaning job every quarter or so. Because we so enjoy seeing pictures of new grandchildren and puppies etc., I'd hate to see them disappear all together...but that way we can post new ones as they occur. I was on another MSN site that folded all together because it's size grew and grew, the manager paid the first fee, but it kept growing. Finally everything just stopped and it was let go, only because it was too costly to run. Janie, what else is K hogging? Melody |

Melody - My apologies for not replying to your latest post here in the Suggestion Box. I'll take my 10 lashes with a wet noodle any time! Thanks for letting us know of your concerns for the site, some of which I hope to dispell. I am not too concerned with running out of space here. MSN allows us to have up to 300 pages, not counting message board pages. Those are practically unlimited, but if I see that we are getting way too many, I'll go back and weed some of them out. I don't foresee that happening in the near future though even at the rate the IKK is growing. I do try to keep the message boards neat and tidy by removing some of the duplicate posts and spam that show up on them regularly. As for the other pages, each photo album counts against the site as 1 page whether it's empty or contains dozens of photos. Unless you are concerned about using up your 3 megs of allotted space, I wouldn't worry about removing any of them for the sake of posting more. That's strictly up to you. I have 30 megs of space and over the past 2 years have posted a lot of stuff over 3 sites with it and have only used a little over 8 megs. Each page I make with backgrounds, graphics, photos, and/or music and the files I have stored counts against that so you can see about how far 3 megs will go by only posting photos and graphics and attachments to the message boards. I have yet to buy more space and don't plan to. Members can check the amount of space they've used by going to their member profiles from the What's New page. The only reason a member would want to buy more space is if they post a lot of these items and are nearing their limit. My advice then would be to get another passport - not buy more space. Keep in mind that the messages you post on the boards and lists do not count toward your allotment. These groups have always been and will continue to be free for all of us. In the event that MSN decides differently, we would just pack our suitcases and move to another community provider. I don't foresee that happening though - there are too many groups out there that would fight to the death over that, including the IKK! And, if by chance we should ever run out of space here, we'll just make an IKK II and link to it. Now for the pages that some might think are not necessary here - we promised to try to have a little something for everyone and that's the reason for all the extra pages I've made. I have removed the Surnames in Common pages because it was getting too time-consuming to wade through and figure out who was researching what surnames and pairing them up. There have also been a few members leave the site after having their names and surnames posted on those pages. What a trip it was to try to straighten that out! The new site meter that I installed on all our custom pages tells me that they are being seen by our members. When they stop getting hits I will remove them as well - not just to save space but because there would be no interest in them. As long as they are being viewed and members continue to submit items for them, they'll stay. Genealogy is the main focus here, but what a drab site this would be with nothing but message boards to look at (I stopped visiting one of my favorite sites for that very reason). We want the IKK to be as appealing as possible to our members. In a nutshell, this site will always be free for members and the managers. We will also have plenty of space for a long time to come so we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. I hope I have allayed some of your concerns about these matters. And by the way, my thanks to you once more for all the help you've been to our members. It's appreciated more than you will ever know! |

I think having a search page would be extremely helpful. |

If it's a site map you are suggesting, I've been thinking about that. Give me some time to work on it, ok? |

I should have said surname or keyword search, where you could search all pages of the site for a particular name or word. |

I tried to reply to this last night, but my Internet Explorer refused to let me post anything. If you'll look on the What's New page, just above the Welcome message, you'll see a search engine. It's not the best search engine but it's the only one I could find that will work with MSN groups. Also, it isn't current - I have to open the site periodically to public restricted so the spider can get in and then after it's indexed I have to close it again. I'll try to get that done in the near future. |

There is a search engine to the site, it just doesn't work too well. I would also like to see a good search engine. Sometimes I run across information that rings a bell from someone's message, but then I can't find the message.
Anybody know where to get a good search engine?

The problem Janie had was since it is a locked site, most of the search engines will not work. She did spend quite a bit of time trying to get something to work. Susan

Loris91, Please go to the "What's new" page the very top of the far left column, at the IKK site. Once you are on the "What's new" page and you find that text link that says " Search this site " it will take you to the very same search engine/spider that the USGenWeb sites use. It does a fantastic job. In order for that service to have access to this private site Janie has to make it public long enough for the spider to index this site. The more recent postings are not indexed as yet. I utilize many of the navigational options available on the board. It took me a few trial and errors to figure it out and familiarize myself with this site. I had both time and desire to do so. Helpful aspects (in my most humble opinion) View: | | Discussions & Replies | | Discussions Only | Prev 20 Next 20 New Discussion some weeks have way more than just 20 postings *giggle giggle* once you are reading an original post and you want to see ALL of the responses without individually clicking on each one... niffty link View All Messages And when there are more responses than allowed to appear on one page.... this nifftly link appears First Previous 7-21 of 21 Next Last I really do appreciate ALL of the work and effort it takes, as well as the mental triumphs and tribulations it takes to keep a bunch like us up-to-date and together. Please remember it is what you make of it also. Hoping to make a difference, if at least for one Carolyn | |

The FreeFind spider is visiting the IKK at this very moment. It shouldn't take long for it to index the site. Once it's completed, the site will be locked again until I request another spider. |
