A bit of Lore and Mythos - Edgar Cayce

For today's lore I want to share a brief piece on Edgar Cayce.  Of all the mystics that I've ever studied, I'm the most enthralled by this man.  In my opinion he's a shining example of how much impact an ordinary person can have on the world when they are true to their gift.

Known to the world as "The Sleeping Prophet", Edgar Cayce was born on a farm near Hopkinsville, Kentucky in the year 1877.  He followed the Christian pantheon and was a lifelong student of the Bible.

Edgar became aware of his prophetic gift one night at the age of six when he was struggling to memorise his spellings.  He had been practicing for hours and getting nowhere.  Finally tiredness took him and he put his spelling book underneath his head and nodded off to sleep.  When he awoke he found that not only did he know all of his spellings but he could cite the exact page and line that every single word was listed on.  From that night on he used his gift for studying and went to the top of his class.

Believing that having a photographic memory was the extent of his gift, Edgar never bothered trying it on anything else.  This quickly changed when at the age of 20 he lost his voice for no apparent reason and it wouldn't come back.  The doctors of the time were mystified.  Regardless of what they tried, they simply couldn't figure out the cause or the cure for Edgar's loss of voice. Edward suffered for a year until as a last resort he decided to try an alternative therapy.  His alternative of choice was hypnotism.

The hypnotist had Edward lay back on his couch and enter a trance state.  Once he was in a deep trance the hypnotist asked Edward what he was suffering from.  In a voice that sounded nothing like his normal voice he replied, "I am suffering paralysis of the vocal cords brought on by nerve strain." And then, in that same alien voice, he went on to prescribe his cure.  When Edgar was brought out of the trance and told what he'd said, he put two and two together.  He knew this was no different from learning his spellings when he was a boy.  From that time on he realised that he could get the answer to anything by entering a trance state, going into the cosmic library, retrieving the answer, and having someone record his answers.

Soon after he cured himself, Edgar found that he could do the same for other people.  When someone came to him for help, he would enter his sleep state and answer any questions that were put to him.  Needless to say, word of him spread like wildfire and people from all over came with a multitude of problems to be solved by the sleeping prophet.

By the time he passed away in the year 1945, Edgar Case had completed over 14,000 readings.

DIY Magick - Eye Pillow

If you've been having trouble getting to sleep, want a more peaceful night or even have a headache

What you need:

  • Dried lavender (you can get this from online shops if you can't find any locally)
  • 1 1/2 cups of wheat grain (you can get this from health food shops)
  • Silk fabric (or any soft fabric will do)

What to do:

  • Take the silk and cut out a rectangle 25 cm by 50cm
  • Fold in half so that the outside of the fabric is showing. then sewing on the wrong side of the fabric.
  • Sew into a tube.
  • Sew one end closed and turn right side out.
  • Fill the bag with wheat and add a handful of lavender.
  • Sew the end closed with a needle and thread.

This pillow can be chilled in the fridge or heated in the microwave depending on your mood (please be careful if you decide to heat it!!). You can use uncooked rice or flaxseeds instead of wheat but I don't know how well they would stand up to being microwaved (I don't own a microwave to try!).

Recipe for the Weekend - Lavender Cookies

If your goal is to have vivid dreams try eating a banana and a piece of cheddar cheese before bed. The natural vitamins and amino acids found in the 2 foods have been known to increase the quality or your dreams!

However, if you just want a restful night, enjoy these delicious cookies before bed with a cup of camomile tea. You'll be sleeping like a baby in no time!

What you need:

  • 2/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon dried lavender flowers (make sure they are for culinary use and not craft use)
  • 1 1/2 cups self-rising flour

What to do:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease two baking sheets.
  3. Cream the butter and the sugar together, then stir in the beaten egg.
  4. Mix in the lavender flowers and the flour.
  5. Drop spoonfuls of the mixture onto the baking sheets.
  6. Bake about 15-20 minutes, until the cookies are golden.

Makes about 30 cookies
