The Basics of Rituals A Ritual is a ceremony used for the celebration of holidays, magick workings, initiation, etc. Can be spontaneous or scripted. During a typical ritual, the Circle is cast, elements are recognised and welcomed, the Gods & Goddesses are invited to join and lend their power to our work. Magick may be performed, a celebration of a moon or holiday or event may occur. A form of thanksgiving may take place, such as the eating of cakes and drinking ale. All Wiccan rituals should include the following: Purification of Self ( bathe and/or anoint with oil ) Purification of Space ( sprinkle fresh water or sweep area ) Creation of Sacred Space ( set up altar, cast circle with athame, carry around salt, censer, candle and water. Invocation ( pray to the Goddess and God, either with memorized invocations or with spontaneous words. Ritual Observance ( perform rituals recorded in the Book of Shadows, if a Sabbat or Esbat. Raising of Energy ( this can be done when needs be, such as not choosing to on the Sabbats, but on the Full Moons to perform magic. Earthing the Power ( eating crackers and drinking wine, milk or water. Thanking the Goddess or the God (in spontaneous words or written words ) Breaking the Circle ( cut circle with athame, draw energy back into the knife, dissemble the altar. Also it is quite popular to wear specialized dress, such as robes and tabards. Colours are also used for their specific vibrations, such as wearing a green robe to help key rituals in Earth energies and Herb magic. Here is a list of colours which can be made into robes and worn for certain spells: Yellow: This is an excellent colour for those involved with divination. Purple: This is favoured for those who work with pure divine power, such as magicians or those who wish to deepen their spiritual awareness of the Goddess and God. Blue: This is suited for healers and those who work with their psychic awareness or for attuning with the Goddess in Her oceanic aspect. Green: This empowers herbalists and magic ecologists. Brown: This is worn by those who attune with animals or who cast spells for them. White: This symbolizes purification and pur spirituality and is also perfect for meditation and cleansing rituals. It is worn for Full Moon celebrations, or to attune with the Goddess. Orange or Red: Robes of these colours can be worn to Sabbats, for protective rites or when attuning with the God in His fiery Solar aspect. Black: This is a popular choice of clour for robes. Contrary to popular misconceptions, black doesn't symbolize evil. It is the absence of colour. It is a protective hue and symbolizes the night, the universe and a lack of falsehood. When a Wiccan wears a black robe, she or he is wearing the colour of outer space, this is symbolically the ultimate source of divine energy. |
