Old Farmer's Almanac

Hark, how all the welkin rings,’Glory to the King of kings?/EM>Peace on Earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled.

—Charles Wesley (1707-88)

December 6 ?
St. Nicholas

In Holland, the Feast of Sinterklaas, or St. Nicholas, is celebrated on the eve of December 6. After dinner, Dutch families hunt for presents, following clues in funny, anonymous poems. They also eat candies and cookies, especially
crispy ginger cookies called speculaas. Around the world, children still place their shoes by the window or door for St. Nicholas to fill them with presents and sweets. He is considered the patron saint of children.

December 7 ?National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
At dawn on Sunday, December 7, 1941, Japanese planes attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in an attempt to cripple the fleet and hinder U.S. intervention in other Japanese actions in the South Pacific. The attack mobilized the United States and signaled its entry into World War II.

Gardening

December Chores

In cold climates, mulch perennials to guard against damage from alternate freeze-thaw cycles.

After a heavy snowfall, go out and gently shake the snow from evergreens; frozen wood is brittle. Remove any broken limbs with a sharp saw.

Look over stored vegetables frequently and remove decaying specimens. Store apples separately.

If you keep a compost pile, consider covering it to prevent rains and snows from leaching out nutrients.

Make holiday wreaths from grapevines, greens, and dry seedpods.

Wit and Wisdom

If December be changeable and mild, the whole winter will remain a child.

Tact is the ability to describe others as they see themselves.  ?/B>Abraham Lincoln
