| Thor Thor is the Norse God of Thunder and the son of Odin and Earth, the most beloved god of the Viking Age. He is best known for his ceaseless battle against the Giants and is the protector of the folk from Midgard and Asgard. Thors weapon is his hammer Mjollnir, which apart from being used for fighting giants was also used for hallowing brides and funeral pyres and according to several runic inscriptions from the late viking age in Denmark, to hallow the Runes. Thor is depicted as a big muscular man with red hair, beard and huge fiery eyes. He is able to summon up great strength and to raise great rages within himself. His transport is a wagon driven by two goats- Tanngrisnir ( Teeth Gnasher or Barer) and Tanngnjostr (Tooth-Gritter). When Thor travels to the south the god Loki often goes with him and has respect for him, Loki is one of the major deities in the Norse pantheon he is connected with fire and magic and can assume many different shapes. He had many affairs even though he was married to Hera and fathered many children with other goddesses and Titans who became Heros and Heroines and he was often featured in their stories. Zeus was seen as the cloud gatherer and god of the Sky and Thunder and was usually depicted with a beard and carring a Thunderbolt. It is said that he exchanged a caduceus for the first flute with Hermes. The worshipping of Zeus sometimes includes the burning of oils. | |
