Imbolc February 2 The Goddess recovers from giving birth to the God. The lengthening periods of light awaken her. The God's strength is increasing and He is now a young, lusty boy. The warmth of the Sun fertilizes the earth (the Goddess), causes seeds to germinate and sprout. And so Imbolc celebrates the earliest stirrings of Spring. It is a time of purification, creativity, and inspiration, a welcoming of change from the old to the new. This is a traditional time for Wiccan initiations and dedications. Herbs The following can be used as decorations on the altar, around the circle and in the home: Snow drop, Rowan, Ritual Candles or torches are lit and held in a circle, and are usually carried around the altar at some point, the symbol of the wheel is placed on the altar, ritual blessing and planting of seeds in pots in the circle with requests to the Goddess and God. Imbolc Lore At sunset or just after ritual it is traditional to light every lamp in the house, for a few moments, or light candles in every room to honour the Suns rebirth. Go for a walk in the snow, trace an image of the Sun in the snow, with your hand. Foods As Imbolc marks the festival of calving, foods from the dairy are appropriate, such as sour cream dishes. Spicy foods in honour of the Sun, curries, dishes made with peppers, onions,leeks,shallots, garlic or chives.
