More Imbolc Lore

Imbolc is a time of Purity, Growth and Renewal, the re-union of the Goddess and God, Fertility and new beginnings.
The words Imbolc/Imbolg comes from the Irish Gaelic meaning of "in the belly" it also derives from the word "oimelc" which means "ewes milk." This is in reference to the coming Spring Time when farm animals begin to lactate ( produce milk for their young ).
Imbolc is also known as Candlemas, when candles were blessed for the coming year, making way for the light. It is also known as Lady Day in honor of the Lady who returns from the Underworld bringing the light and warmth of the spring. Another name in American and European Folklore is GroundHog Day, it is said that the groundhog emerges from his hole on this day, but if he sees his shadow then winter will stay for another 6 weeks.
In Ireland it is known as Brigids Night ( pronounced Breed ) other variations are Brigit, Briget, Brighid and Brid, this is where the word Bride comes from. Brigid is the patroness of healing and birth and was honored with sacred bonfires symbolizing lifeforce, purity and cleansing, to bless livestock. She is also the Goddess of the Blacksmiths and poets, to whom she gives inspiration.

This is a good time of year to have a good spring clean, out with the old and in with the new. Not just in your home but with your life too. It is a good time to reassess ourselves, like...do we need to move on in our lives from  being stuck in a rut, making mistakes and emotional baggage. This is a good time to try new things such as an Art Hobby, New Job, Learning A New Skill, Trying Different Foods, Taking Up a Dance Class or New Sport, the possibilities are endless! Dreams that you have at this time of year can also mean something important to do with moving on in your life, so you might want to make a note of your dreams.
Other things associated with Imbolc are:

Besoms, White Flowers, Candle Wheels, Straw Dollies in Baskets of White Flowers, Acorn Wands, Ploughs.
Pumpkin seeds, Sunflower Sedds, Poppyseeds, Cakes, Muffins, Scones, Breads, Dairy Products, Peppers, Onions, Garlic, Raisins, Spiced Wines and Herbal Teas.
Amethyst, Bloodstone, Garnet, Ruby, Onyx and Turquoise.
Things to do could include going on walks and looking for the signs of Spring, making Priapic Wands ( Acorn Wands ), Decorating Ploughs, Feasting and Making Bonfires.
