Mabon In Celtic Mythology
Culhwch was the son of Cildydd, one of King Arthur's Knights. Culhwch's stepmother hated him so much that she put a curse on him, that he could only marry the woman called Olwen. Olwen was the daughter of a giant called Yspaddaden. It took culhwch a year to find Olwen and when he met her they fell deeply in love. But Olwens father did not want her to marry Culhwch, but Culhwch had to persuade her giant father to let him marry her.
The giant had huge eyes with droopy eyelids that needed to be levered up with supports for him to see. Yspaddaden threw spears at Culwch and his men, but each time they managed to catch them and throw them back, one of the throws hit one of the giants eyes. Yspaddaden then agreed to the marriage on the condition that Culhwch must perform 39 difficult tasks first. So with the assistance of his men and a couple of Divine allies, he completed the tasks and married Olwen.
One of the tasks that Culhwch had to complete was to steal a Comb, Scissors and a Razor from between the ears of a wild and fierce enchanted Boar called Twrch Trwyth. But to do this he needed a swift hound, but the hound he could use to hunt the boar could only be handled by Mabon the son of Modron. But Mabon had been imprisoned in Gloucester Castle since he was 3 nights old and only the wisdom of the woodland animals knew of his whereabouts. So an expedition was mounted to first find Mabon and release him from his prison. He then helped capture the Wild Boar with the help of the Hound and Culhwch went on to marry Olwen.
