Samhain The end of summer, the dead are honoured. October 31 Celebrated as Halloween Marks the Pagan New Year. In the past, this was the time when animals were slaughtered to ensure food for the through the depths of Winter. Identified with the animals, the God falls as well to ensure continuing existence. The veil between the worlds of life and death is said to be thin on this night. Samhain is a time of reflection, looking back over the last year, coming to terms with death, and honouring ancestors. Herbs The following can be used as decorations on the altar, around the circle and in the home: Chrysanthemum, Wormwood, Apples, Pears, Hazel, Thistle, Pomegranates, All grains, Harvested fruit and nuts, Pumpkins. Corn. Ritual Scrying in smoke, candle flame or fire,calling the departed souls, leaving food outside after ritual for the dead. Symbols, Tools and Colours Red or black, Pomegranates, Pumpkins and Apples. Samhain Lore On Samhain night leave a plate of food outside the home for the souls of the dead. Place a candle in the window to guide them to the lands of eternal summer. Bury apples in the earth to feed the passed ones on their journey.
