The Herbal Code

The Herbal Code is a legendary list of herbal names disguised by other names. In the Old Days there were Witches who had a great deal of hidden herbal knowledge and lore. As many herbs are dangerous and have pharmaceutical properties, they were kept secret so that they didn't fall into the wrong hands. So a Code was created to keep these recipes secret and to discourage their use by those uninitiated into the craft.

The following list is part of the herbal code common to several traditions:

A Dead Man: Ash Root, carved into a crude humanshape.

Fingers: Cinqfoil.

Adder's Tongue: Plantain.

Hair: Maidenhair Fern.

Bat's Wing: Holly Leaf.

Hand: The unexpanded frond from a male Fern.

Bat's Wool: Moss.

Heart: Walnut.

Blood: Elder Sap.

Lion's Tooth: Dandelion.

Bloody Fingers: Foxglove.

Skin Of A Man: Fern.

Brains: congealed Gum from a Cherry Tree.

Skull: Skullcap.

Bull's Blood: Horehound.

Snake: Bistort.

Corpse Candles: Mullein.

Tongue Of Dog: Hound's Tongue.

Ear Of An Ass: Comfrey.

Unicorn Horn: True Unicorn Root.

Ears Of A Goat: St.John's Wort.

Worms: Thin Roots.

Tooth Or Teeth: Pine Cones.

These animals called for the following herbs:

Blue Jay: Bay Laurel.  Lizard: Calamint.
 Cat: Catnip.  Nightingale: Hop.
 Cuckoo: Orchis, Plantin.  Rat: Valerian.
 Dog: Couchgrass.  Sheep: Dandelion.

 Hawk: Hawkweed.  Toad: Sage.
 Lamb: Lambs Lettace.  Weasel: Rue.
 Linnet: Eyebright.  Woodpeckers: Peony.

When the recipe called for a certain part of something, the following herb was used:

The Eye: Inner part of a blossom.
The Guts: The roots and stalk.
 The Hair: Dried, stringy herb.
 The Head: The flower.
The Heart: A bud, or a big seed.
The Paw, Foot, Leg, Wing, Toe or Scale: The leaf.
 The Privates: The seeds.
 The Tail: The stem.
 The Tongue: The petal.
The Tooth: The leaf, seed pod.
