| Elves | | Elves are creatures that figure prominately in Europe, England, Scotland and Scandinavia. In England they are faery-like beings, while in Scotland they are often Human size and in scandinavia they are Light and Dark, thus being Good and Evil. Elves appear to have derived from Anglo Saxon folklore in which they share the qualities of the Celtic Sidhe or faery. They were said to shoot arrow heads made of Flint stones, these were Elf Shot and could cause distress. If a cow or an animal suddenly died, it was said to be caused by Elf Shot. In Witch lore Elves were an ancient race. Morgan Le Fay was said to be off the Elven race. Elves differ from faeries, though both are associated with Spirits of the dead. Willow the Wisps-mysterious bog lights are said to be the spirits of the dead not yet welcomed into the Elven Realm. Elves are associated with several sacred trees- Ash, Birch, Cherry, Cypress, Fir, Holly, Laurel, Oak and Pine, where it is said that they make their homes. If a person wanted to take a cutting from one of these trees, they must ask permission from the Elves and an offering was to be left. Offerings of Wool and Bread were left while saying "Great Elven Elder's, I bring you these offerings. Something to spin and something to eat. Enjoy these gifts and forget all offenses. | NEXT | |
