Does anyone remember the fifth year of 86 getting caught down town shoplifting. I am serving with one of them in 35 Engineer Regiment he is out in the gulf at the moment. A certain MR Smudge Smith he claims is innocents after we bumped into each other.

Was that the trip in Taunton when a load got caught ?  I cant remember the names of all those involved  as I was a mere jub at the time....Johnathan Bywater, Beale are all names that spring to mind for that occasion.  No-one seems to have been expelled for that though.  I suspect it had something to do with the fact that there was quite a few people involved and the fifth year would have been empty if they had gotten rid of them all !!!

Come to think of it.....despite alot of the activities that went on there (great tuck shop heist / adventures in minibuses etc etc) the head never seemed to expel anyone from th school.  Clearly the numbers were important to the head.

ho hum.

Nathan come to think of it mate I remember that the head said I was suspended. But then he backed down it was all because Cameron Stonehouse hit a golf ball at us and I didn't take to kindly to this he did hit Justin Hildage on the head with it. So because he nearly hit me I sparked him out so the head suspended me but then backed down later I don't know why he backed down but he did.

Okay, this has been something which had been kept relatively hush hush since its occurence.

The incident, as nathan correctly mentions, happened one saturday afternoon in Taunton and involved the class of 1986 and a combination of mischief and high spirits (oh alright, a full blown shoplifting spree through the town!).  Needless to say, they were caught and QS was in disgrace, and correct me if I am wrong, butthe weekend ventures were cancelled.  However, and only a handful of individuals knew of this, was that a group from the class of 1989 had been tipped off earlier in the week, by a prefect (you know who you are ...) that something was going to kick off.  So much so, that three of those present were taking great pleasure over the situation during chapel with Peaster the following sunday morning and , in front of the whole school, had to tell Peaster they knew nothing about the incident!!  How they got away with that I will never know (come on you three, how did you do it??).  At no stage to the best of my knowledge did DP ever realise how many people knew about it or how it had been a spontaneous thing!  I can remember people swarming around the TV in the common room seeing if it had made the local news! and being informed that it had made the national papers! - and, of course, needless to say, a very unhappy DP roaming the school!!!!!

I remember the Sunday Chapel after the shop lifting - hell fire and brimstone from Peaster. Dave reading the local papers and I believe a few national papers - 'Toff go on the rampage!!' and the like.

I was (I think) only in the first year (about 12-ish) and I though the school was disgraced for ever - little did I know that no one had ever even heard of our school for the most part!!

I wonder if there is a way to get a hold of some of these clippings??

Mike

If you mean smudge, he was a good mate of my brother, and I would imagine (from memory) he would be involved in there somewhere!  When you see him tell him tom give us a yell if wants to contact michael and I'll sort it.

I was in the zeros at the time and, like you Mike, I remember the head telling how bad it was and how we could not forsee the effect this would have on the school in the long term.  Trips to Taunton were cancelled for a while which made no odds to me as the highlight of a zero on saturday afternoon was a trip down to Nether Stowey where I would spend my grand fortune of £2 pocket money on Spar biscuits and mousetraps from 2000AD (?).  Anyhow I am sure that even the likes of Millfield have a few dark secrets as well !  No criminal records so no harm done !!

Nathan,

I also used to invest in a big pack of rich-tea biscuits and a tube of hob-nobs and a big bottle of pop - but what the dicken did you do with the mouse traps ... did I miss a trick ....

I remember investing in a spud gun at the height of the craze ....

Beano's and Beazers, I'd wait and read others .... what was the name of the cartoon gang that lived in someone's head and the gang of crazy mice .....

Yeah, I'm not sure why now but back then I went through a phase with Matt Dunn wherby we made and bought all sorts and traps to catch mice and other rodents.  Obviously the traps we bought only killed the mice but we made all sorts of elaborate devives designed to just catch them so we could do.......god knows what !  Needless to say we never caught anything in any of them......I guess Quantock "Gold" Chedder that the head bought in was not appealing enough to them !

I remeber the cartoon about the gang that lived in the head but can't for the life of me remember what the name was !
