Informative - or-  Distracting ?

Hello people I've been Tinkering with the School Photo Lists again ...

Please (those of you who care about such things) have a look at the 1990 School Photo. I've added little icons to indicate people who are members of the QS Community.

If you think this is informative - or remotely pleases you in some fashion then let me know - if however you think things are crowded enough on these Lists and think these silly little icons should go, also spill your guts ...

I've only done the 1990 photo - waiting for your input. Also the 1990 photo list was done from memory so I may have missed a few names. Those of you from later years I hope you will team together and do the 'lower order' as it were - or just add an icon to yourself !!

I think I may add a link from my icon to my profile ... if I can, I've not tried yet - might not work!!

Anyway 'ears and give me some noise !!??!!!

Mike

PS I'm sure there are gonna be people who are gonna want to add individual icons to their name, to stand out just a little i.e. "  or  "- but I think in this case, I think the photo Lists will get really messy fast. So I'd prefer if you just use the icon selected !! Maybe the consensus would be on the use of a different icon ...?

Yep, I like that, Mike. Works well.

However, from a 'user' viewpoint, I found that having been confronted with a list of members, the desire to browse individual profiles was quite strong. But I didn't want to come out of the photo page, especially since it takes a while to load back up again if you go out and come back in..

In other words, I think you need a link from each icon, if you can do it without too much hassle anyway.

I tried to do this once but the problem was - when people change their nick names, the link to their profiles are broken .... and so it becomes a pain to keep up to date ...

I did try put a link from my icon to my profile but the icon then gets a ugly box around it ... so I killed it again ideas welcome .... but ideally I'd like to have these links ....

Maybe I can add a different icon or something else ...?

Bri,

Maybe the best thing to do would be to put a link from the persons photo number e.g A13 to their profile .... might not look too ugly ...?

That sounds like a good idea too.

I don't know how much control you've got with the MSN Communities hosting. However if you could do something like a 'hotspot' image (like you can in 'true' web content) that could be really good - set a link to the profile and have the persons name come up either in a 'tooltips' type box or in the brower's status area when the mouse pointer is hovered over the subject..

Of course, that would probably mean much more (too much?) work for you as I doubt if us scumbag-level users would be able to update the photo lists in that way like we can with the database version.

Dunno.

I think I've got what you mean -

Use the "map" command to put hot-spots on the photo - I guess circles would be best radiating from the persons face - the "alt" property to give the name of the person in the mouse "hover" mode and if the person is a member then have a link to their profile .... apologies for my HTML speak ...

Well the site will allow you to put HTML pages into the site *and* I also believe HTML pages into a database column ... so I think what you suggest can be done ... while at the same time keeping the database list run in parallel ... hence people can stll add people to the list but the photo would have to be updated later ...

In fact I sort of thought of this before but decide that it was too much work ... however if someone wanted to volunteer to do the above task .... they'd be mad - but welcome to do so

Mike
