Ok....I've had a woman come into my chair 3 times now. she came from a previous salon with a problem of overlapped color/or bleach and a break point of 3 inches from the hair shaft. Her roots were 2 inches of level 6 ORANGE...she was pregnant, and all she wanted was to get back to a level 8 blonde, with various highlights. So...keeping all this in mind, I tackeled the orange issure and attempted to "refreshen" her ends. I noticed after using a G in the Colorance in Goldwell on her ends she turned Green, her roots never accepted any color, and for the next few visits the same issue got seemingly worse. Her roots NEVER did anything but turn orange, her broken ends only turned more green inbetween visits. The last time I saw her, I asked her if she had been in any pools, hot tubs, or if she had copper pipes and maybe the chlorine in the tap water was reacting with her damaged hair, turning it green. No,no,no she said, and after suggesting she do a chlorine treatment with Malibu she said no and refused to cut the damaged ends, and her roots refused to be anything but orange. Has anyone ever seen anything like this??? Hair that refuses to color properly, green damaged ends?...I've noticed chemical chages like this in pregnant women before and even chemotherapy patients....but Never like this....If any one has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it....I'm stumpped!!! Thanks Guys...Michele |

What's in her hair is a good question. What was done to it before? Also, what is her natural level? Is she on any medications? I agree, the pregnancy might have had something to do with it, there are hormone changes. You made a good suggestion with the Malibu treatment, she shouldn't have refused it. I'm assuming the G stands for green, which is a cool tone. You could have either used a warm formula such as gold for the ends, which sounds porous, or filled first. Of course using a non-ammoninated color, it sounds like she has major damage already. If she also refuses to trim her ends, then she is preventing you from fully helping her! I would tell her that you know what you're doing, and the only way that you can get on the road to making her hair healthy again (which may be a lengthy process), she is going to have to cooporate with you, or else there is really not much you can do for her. If you find out anything else, or have anything else to add, please do, and we'll be glad to help you further. |

Thank you so much for your help.....her starting level is between a 5-6....more on the 5 side. Very ashy. The "G" that I attempted to fill her hair in with a first was an 8G in the Goldwell Colorance which is a gold....the reason for it was the level she was on her ends was a dull ashy 10 level.....when it turned green I freaked...naturally.....and from that point on I watched it over the course of a few months and it slowly accumulated a bit more green.....thats why I figured it must be a chemical deposit in the hair....either from medication and pregnancy or even pools. Ive been doing hair for 12 years and never seen a mess like that, let alone not be able to help a client:( So if any of you have seen weird hair like this feel free to comment because this one throws me for a loop!!!
Thanks So Much Guys!!!.....Michele

I'm also wondering about the formula you used for her regrowth, and the level of developer? It's also been my experience that when I try to change ash to gold, it turns green, or an off-color. Adding a little bit of red to the formula neutralizes it. I would also insist on the Malibu treatment, to cleanse and strip out anything that might have built up in her hair, including the color attempts, before the next formula. This is very interesting, I would love to get to the bottom of it too! |

Star is right, the opposite of green is red........and on a level 10 the only remaining pigment if any is yellow.........putting 8 gold back on is adding orange - yellow......I guess there is some blue too, and yellow and blue makes green.......... |

Whats weird about regrowth thing, is ive tried every formula i can think of......10 vol, 20, 30,40....with various formulas like blue/violet...violet/blue...combinations with beige and "N" series, high lift, just breaking the base......Everything!!!!.....ALL comes out the same scary Orange tint, no matter what you use. I've tried all ash additives, which, I'm not too crazy about using.....even this last time.....Bleach!?!...Yuck....Still can't get the horendous yellow/orange tint out!!! Nothing seems to tint out the orange, or cut throught it, OR color over it. Thats why I suspect something else in the body other than hormonal changes....maybe meds.....I don't know. Since we live in Destin Florida and our water has alot of chlorine, sulfur, and other lovely metals, I think the damaged hair grabbed onto whats in the water and caused the green...and her roots....well....I don't know. She was supposed to get a formula from her stylist in Colorado to see if that works.....I'd love to see him wave the majic wand and cure this issue!!!!!...I just want to know whats in the hair:)

You have a point with the mineral and chemical in the water theory. Malibu 2000 is great for clearing that out. You knew that, but she is preventing you from helping her. Also, tell her to look into getting her water tested, it may be the root of the problem. Sometimes even if I'm sure that a high lift color should work, the only thing that could cut through the brassiness is bleach. I'm a natural level 6, but could never achieve any kind of a blond without orange tones (I have very strong red undertones), unless I bleach it. Others have tried to convince me otherwise, but I know my hair. |

I would have been satisfied with breaking her base and getting her to a nice level 6 and highlighting various shades throughout. This was not aceptable to her, so we ended up with all of the other things I mentioned before. Shes convinced her stylist from Denver has the solution.....I told her to bring his formula....I'd love to see what his solution is...he's been doing her hair for 15 years. The salon she went to befor eme wouldn't allow her to bring in her formula...thus ending up where she is now. I said bring it in....what can it hurt.

I'm also curious what solution her previous stylist has. Also, I wish she would realize that being that she moved to a different climate, there has been a change in what's in the water like you suspect. |

Thats what my buisness partner and I suspected. The water here has a high comcentrate of sulfur, chlorine and other various minerals. Without filters on the water comming through your pipes, whether its at my shop or their house, hair can turn into a monster if its in a delicate state. When/if she calls back and gives me the formula I'll be sure to let all of you know. In the mean time, I'm in the process of switching to an all vegetable color line (Herbe Tint). I'm hoping this will bring back even the most damaged of tresses without lifting and depositing too much, further damaging the hair. The results I've seen so far have been the best I've worked with yet, and my clients are more than happy to switch. Florida has some of the worst washed out/damaged blondes because of our climate, so, I'm positive this color line will prove to be the best rejuvinator they've experienced yet!!!! Thanks Everyone for your responses, youve been such a great help:)!!!

There is a new condtioning product on the market called EMS ( emergency maintenance system) it guarantees to repair damaged hair in only one treatment. I have used it once and was very pleased with the results. |

Have you asked her at all if at any point before you touched her hair if she has done any home hair color? or what shampoos and conditioners she uses..?? It has been my exp if they have played for yrs and yrs with home hair color... That it builds up extreme resistance against professional colors causing conflicts such as you have explained.... and or if she has done over and over semi permanent colors... It could have stained the hair so bad...that it is not allowing anything to change.... ??? It could be? Hope it helps maybe? |

Have you tried to fill her fried ends with yellow/orange? If you dont add
some warmth, no matter what you do, they will be green. Extremely porous hair
will only accept the drabbest color in the formula. In extreme cases, and this
sounds extreme, the only thing that will help is a good pair of scissors. And
some protein treatments.
Good luck....
