Habakkuk Announces the Doom of the Unrighteous
Key Verse:
“The earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.?Habakkuk 2:14
Habakkuk is a book that defends the goodness of God and His Sovereignty, even in the face of wickedness that seems to prevail uncontested and unchecked. Habakkuk illustrates how God is always behind the scenes orchestrating judgment. God addresses evil when man thinks He is silent, impotent or nonchalant; God rules in the affairs of men.
Through the prophecy of Habakkuk, God reveale3d that He would chastise His people for their sins and that He would employ the terribly wicked Babylon Empire to do it. Chastisement s God’s judgment, but it is also God’s grace. As such, chastisement is a blessing and not a curse. (See Hebrews 12:11). We learn obedience by suffering (Hebrew 5:8). Suffering, paticularly when it is deserved, encourages us to obey so that we may avoid the future consequences of sin.
It is because of His intention to bring righteousness to His people that God chastises. God’s judgment is certain but it comes only after the long-suffering of His grace has expired. Only God know when one is “ripe for judgment;?therefore, God does not judge a sinner until or her iniquity is full or ripened. At such time, there will be an appointed harvest. God will put His sickle to the vine only when the fruit of unrighteousness has ages.
However, because of His grace, the Lord always gives a warning to allow for repentance. During this period of God’s grace, we have ample opportunity to repent. Unfortunately, in many instances, people simply refuse to do so because they erroneously believe that the pleasures of sin are more desirable than the benefits of avoiding the penalty.
Therefore, man continues sinning and disregards the consequences. Man many refuse to repent, but God has a plan to thwart his purposes. If you are unsaved, repent and received God’s Holy Spirit. If you are saved, allow His spirit to correct your judgment so that you can respond to Him in all things.
Have a blessed day and weekend.
Jesus bless
