Expectation

Witan© : Why does it exist, what does it do to our lives etc etc

yogaom® : expectation is a great topic

SATORI2 : That sounds good, related to detachment

Witan© : In life we fine humans have a tendency to expect things to me this seems natural.  I expect that if i put my hand on a hot burner it will most likely burn.  This is reasonable right?

SATORI2 : well, that's because its empirical

yogaom® : yes

Witan© : Yes, but what if I came to expect that all burners burnt whether they were hot or not?  This would be unreasonable, even if it was based in logic. All the burners I have encountered were hot therefore they all burn period. Logical just not reasonable. End result...burner phobia.

Bad things happen outside therefore one might expect bad things to always happen outside. End result... agoraphobia.  Solution satori if you will?
Ok I'll do it, detach from ones expectation. Expectation is only healthy in very finite circumsatnces, so why do we expect so much more??

SATORI2 : because we have appetites that are neverending

Witan© : appetites for expectation?

SATORI2 : or the unexpected

Witan© : Hope and expectation are different, why do we allow hope to twist and sour into expectation. Can acceptance, true acceptance exist with expectation?

SATORI2 : because some of our hopes are based on preconcieved expectations

Witan© : Very true Satori

Witan© : Could this be lust of results, getting so wrapped up in what one hopes outcomes will what one hopes outcomes will be that a fantasy develops around
this hope and it becomes an expected outcome?

SATORI2 : a kind of reward punishment outcome.

Witan© :  Witch hunters expected 'witches' to be evil therefore everything they did confirmed it because it was expected.

SATORI2 : Yes, I would be inclined to think. That's interesting you say that Witan because...I went to school with a girl who thought all men are pigs, and it was
no suprise she always got those.

Witan© : I expect that life is dynamic, dynamic means ever changing.  I further expect that a part of true change is temporary stability

Witan© : Yes sat I have seen that as well. We create the future we expect in many ways.

SATORI2 : On the other hand My friend Shelley sees the beauty in everyone, and she is living a loving and successful life, dispite sins of the past like drugs and drinking.

Witan© : good for her

SATORI2 : Kant said, the only reality we know is ours, There is no Objective Reality....
only that which we create.

Witan© : Absolutely Satori and yes letting go is so important.

SATORI2 : So why not create what's to be best in your world?

Witan© :  Yes, why not expect the best, and accept dissappointments as they come; because they will. Rather than expect the worst and be miserable only to barely notice when things go right.

SATORI2 : The problem with expectations is they departamentalize you are limited to them
you can't think out of the box

Witan© : true, hmm.  So we agree then that often expectation is bad but sometimes it is good

SATORI2 : not intrinsically bad or good its how you apply

Witan© : lol, yes

Witan© : If we draw back into the now mentally, envision the future will it to
happen, then work on each step and accept whatever happens to change the path to your goal then there is no room for expectation and no real room for dissappointment.

SATORI2 : Which I would consider Belief to be. Because of its Eteology.

Simple_Dream : managing it-- using it to see possible outcomes-- using it to shape outcomes -- and when things take a turn-- turn with them-- and set your sights on new expectations

Witan© : By keeping our minds from dwelling in past or future we manage our
expectations.

SATORI2 : and faith, where it would be more open to revelation, but that's something totally different for this chat.

Witan© : Yes Simple, the taoist river.  Shoot for the ocean but accept that th terrain will twist and turn alot before you make it.

Simple_Dream : why different?  just because it goes by a different name?

Witan© : Yes, Satori explain further if you dont mind.

SATORI2 : different because I like where Witan is going with the conversation instead of where my mind is at.

Simple_Dream : it all looks like the same explanation to me--- atleast in my mind-- expectation, faith and the taoist river-- God and the ocean-- its all part of the same process

SATORI2 : Well with the talk of expectations, I thought of faith and belief and the difference these two have in the spectrum of expectations. You can read above on what I said about belief.

Witan© : lol, ok

SATORI2 : Belief having preconcieved notions with the key root word "Be" in it.

Witan© : I see what you mean

Simple_Dream : I do find your point about the difference between faith and belief

Witan© : yes

Simple_Dream : I had faith long before I had belief

SATORI2 : Faith, You know that there is a God out there or at least feel She is there

Witan© : Belief is intellectual and thereofore learned and memorized it is solid faith flows form a different source.

SATORI2 : but you don't have a preconcieved definition on what to "Expect" you go with "Revelation" and unfortunately that has been lost by many... the fact that spirituality and faith and all matters beyond intellect is revealed.
Simple_Dream : I wonder how some Christians would respond to this difference--- could they accept that a person had faith in God without belief in God?

SATORI2 : Revealed through Art, Meditation, War, Relationships, etc. little by little we get these revelations if... "IF" we have faith in the process.  Am I making sense? I take these lessons what I've learned in the fishbowl of acting and being on stage and hope to God I can share it and it makes sense. Frickin' Jesus took 40 days in the desert for things to be revealed and he still had to chill out in the Garden of Gethsemane, for more revelation of God or the God's plan.

Yogaom® : lol

Simple_Dream : ok explain this to me--- I tell someone I believe and have faith in God-- they say that is not good enough-- you have to believe in Jesus-- then they say that Jesus is God-- so if Jesus is God-- what am I missing?

SATORI2 : Buddha was under a tree forever... and he was still learning after that. We tend to forget how these gifts that we have and lessons we need to learn because of these expectations. And I lost my train of thought..... I do have faith that it will be revealed to me any moment now....

Simple_Dream : lol

SATORI2 : Maybe its a signal to tackle your question Dream. Well, what makes you think you are missing something?

Witan© : Satori, we humans have a habit of clinging to belief so we dont have to endure the perceived hardships of faith.

Simple_Dream : I don't think I am Satori

SATORI2 : absolutely Witan. We don't take the time to learn about each other. Brings up the line "even the dull and the ignorant, they too have a story"

Simple_Dream : so--- witan-- any advice on how to convey that message to someone very carefully-- so they do not even realize it is happening?

SATORI2 : Desiderata, is a great prayer on faith and breaking expectations if I ever heard one.

Witan© : lol. So they dont even know, I'de really have to think on that.

SATORI2 : Well, it makes sense what you said Witan.

Witan© : Usually though the best bet is to ask them questions where you know
their answers and lead them to making the statement themselves.

Simple_Dream : its a subtle spiritual dance I have to make.

SATORI2 : sticking to belief and not taking the Ahem leap of faith.

Simple_Dream : ok, thanks for the advice Witan

Witan© : if they say it themselves they assume their brilliance shone the light
not you, that does involve setting aside ones own pride

Witan© : Ty sat I thought so

Simple_Dream : nah-- just hiding your grin from them is all

Witan© : no simple

Simple_Dream : ok. You have to relinquish self interest and allow them to make their own path and conclusions, even if you are influencing those conclusions

Witan© : Yes.  Accepting that it is and always will be there choice, we dont make anyone do anything.

Simple_Dream : of course

Witan© : poit
Witan© : narf
Witan© : well all, my time is up

Simple_Dream : my instinct with this person was to encourage them to delve deeper into their studies of Christianity and faith-- rather than opposing them in any way.

Witan© : Yes, good call Simple

Simple_Dream : thanks

Witan© : Opposition causes people to sink into practiced defenses.
Good night all
