Aside from the Late Unpleasantness, there are a number of ways to tell where is the South and where not. One is the frequency of Baptist Churches which is pretty good. Another is the accent, but that's messy, and good social manners is reasonable but not definitive. None of them are as precise as Kudzu. The absolute best indicator of exactly the area of The South is where that mighty weed, Kudzu, grows. Where Kudzu grows, you can depend on that area being truly Southern. Where it doesn't grow is not Southern, no matter what anyone says. Here is the area. You notice that West Texas and Southern Florida has no Kudzu. Need I say more? The book is 'My tears spoiled my aim' by John Shelton Reed. REDNECKCA |

Here once again is the map of where Kudzu grows. It is as good as any method for determining exactly where is the South. You will note that West Virginia, Maryland, and upper Virginia are not in the South. Neither are south Florida or west Texas. Since I am not from any of those areas, I think the Kudzu area is about right. REDNECKCA |

US 50 across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio is the northern boundary of The South. And Interstate 4 across Central Florida is approximately the southern boundary. |

#20 Kudzu grows a little further south than is depicted on the illustration. Add 50 miles. |

Sunday- Loving BBQ is a prerequisite to being a Southerner. I see you are from Virginia, but don't know which kind of BBQ you are accustomed to. There are two general types of Southern BBQ. One is the Eastern Seaboard area and about 200 miles inland was settled by a different group of immigrants than further west in the Appalachians. The East Coast Minimalist, as it is called, is nothing more than vinegar and pepper on chopped pork, along with hushpuppies and slaw. As you travel further west you will encounter what is named The Trans-Montane Baroque, which contains all the red stuff, and sometimes sweet stuff. Each group has it's own fanatics. REDNECKCA |

Sunday is an Illini who moved to Virginia after she qualified for Social Security. She drives 28 m.p.h. in the left lane & goes to buffet restaurants where she shares barbecue with her husband to save money. She rarely tips & is probably more Canadian than southern. T-Dog |

Finding the south is easy. Turn left until you smell it, than right until you step in it. Then you are there. What a awful place. T-Dog |

During the Late Unpleasantness in Korea, my unit was sent to Camp Drum for exercizes before going to the Land of the Morning Calm. We were essentially all from the deep South and were unfamiliar with the area around Buffalo, or anyplace North , for that matter. The first day we got there, there was about six inches of snow on the ground, and the temperature around 35. Not bad, I thought, I can live with this. That night the temperature fell into the basement and it snowed SIX FEET. What an awful place! REDNECKCA |

No hurricanes, blue haired drivers going 18 mph in the left lane, people sharing lunches, 98% humidity coupled with stifling heat, & people too dumb to figure out a "chad." T-Dog |

Ref. message #26: Mr. The TallDog: It may well be true that I got side-tracked by Redneck's post on BBQ and spent no small amount of time trying to remember which type of BBQ I like best and completely forgot to return to this thread. It is also true that I am a transplanted Illini. HOWEVER, I want you to know that I once received a speeding ticket and so your allegation of my driving 28 mph is completely false. I never go over 25 mph and I never travel in the left lane. I only make right turns. You owe me a trip to the buffet. sunday |

Anyone has an outline to study on the Reconstruction of the South after the Civil War, from 1865 and on. I am interested in this particular time, but it is hard to weed out in the order of events as they happen. Such as sweeping legislation on the 13, 14, and 15 amendments, black codes, etc. Any reply would be greatly appreciated as I am writing this time period for my research paper. |
